Weather notes mix oil patch activity with county drills, wildcats, and new locations across Banner and Kimball counties. A tornado levelled the District 9 school near Bridgeport Sunday night, causing major damage and prompting rebuilding plans, while nearby storms caused crop and road damage.
Pedestrians walking against the light at the corner of 12th Ave and Illinois St caused Raymond Frahm to swing his car left striking bumper of Wilton Greene. Police reported $50 damage to Greene’s bumper. Robert Gilliland backed from a park stall. his car door opened and hit Floyd Crouse’s parked car door.
Fort Sidney Days will feature a Kids Day with a parade on Friday June 29 themed The Good Ol Days. Prizes total 141 across artistic comical and historical categories with 10 7 and 5 awards and a 15 sweepstakes. A free 1 p.m. Fox Theatre movie, 3 p.m. games, and treats at the band shell follow. Boyd H. French, 52, longtime Sidney resident and former manager of the Farmers Union Co op elevator at Lorenzo, died Friday evening in Sterling after a heart attack. Funeral services are Wednesday at 2 p.m. at First Christian Church with burial in Greenwood Cemetery. Graveside rites by Elks Lodge. Survived by wife Margaret and son Larry Lee French of Sidney. He was born May 2, 1906, in Stromsburg and lived in Potter and Hayden before moving to Sidney in 1941.
Patrolman Del Shipley and Deputy Sheriff Gene Mortis arrested a man and wife east of Sidney in a stolen vehicle taken from North Platte. William Edward Harris, 22, of Phoenix Arizona, and his wife Maxine were jailed and to be returned to North Platte to face charges. Harris has an artificial limb, officers said.
Arnold A Quinonez a 27 year old Harrisburg school teacher from Scottsbluff told officers he swerved to avoid a jack rabbit on the spur to Sioux Ordnance near the plant. He was thrown from the car with minor injuries. The car overturned and struck a fence on Dr G H Thompson Sidney property causing 250 car damage and 25 fence damage. The rabbit escaped unhurt.
A district court jury ruled for the City of Sidney in a damage suit over the value of vacant lots near the 13th Street underpass. Plaintiffs George and Mollie Backer of Scottsbluff sought 10 000. the case previously failed and the Nebraska Supreme Court ordered a new trial. A special jury heard the case with jurors including Allen Nelson and others. The plaintiff has ten days to file a motion for a new trial.
Roy E Gillham a 70 year old Peetz rancher died at Cheyenne County Memorial Hospital after a heart attack suffered in his car in downtown Sidney His son Dean was with him and took him to a local physician then to the hospital where he died Funeral services will be Thursday at 2 pm from the Evangelical United Brethren Church in Peetz Rev Raymond Scott officiating burial in Riverside Cemetery Sterling Gehrig and Son Funeral Home in charge He was born May 10 1888 in Waverly Neb to Frank and Alice Gillham married Orpha Crace Feb 21 1912 later moving to Peetz in 1917 Survivors include Orpha three sons Kenneth Dean and Robert all of Peetz eight grandchildren one sister Mrs Charles Mathes Central City and two brothers Claude and Merle both of Peetz

Scott Bullard appeared in County Court on a petit larceny charge. He pleaded not guilty with a waiver of preliminary hearing. Judge C W Smith bound the case over to District Court for trial. Bond set at $500. Sheriff W W Schulz said Bullard possessed eleven pairs of nylon hose from a local department store at arrest and had prior convictions for the same charge.
John Cramer of Lincoln and the engineering firm Fulton and Cramer was stricken with a heart attack at his home last Sunday. He has worked near Sidney due to expansion of city utilities and is well known there. He is on the road to recovery and hospitalized at Bryan Memorial in Lincoln.
The 49th Rotary International convention gathered 12 000 attendees from 108 countries in Dallas Texas starting June 1. Sidney delegates Ed Runge and Bill Vaughn attend as Runge prepares to become club president July 1 for one year. Talks by Robert C. Hill Donald H Andrews Price Daniel Robert Thornton and others highlight international understanding while the organization reports 9808 clubs and 306 new clubs in the past eleven months.
Film star Broderick Crawford stayed overnight at the Ft. Sidney Motor Hotel on his way to New York where he will work on a new TV series. He told manager Chester Johnson he plans to inspect the hot new West Coast hotel he heard about.
Chandler and Simpson's oil rig near Kimball, Nebraska, reportedly drilled 238,265 feet in 1957 across Kimball, Banner and Cheyenne counties, with 40 wells and three field discoveries. Soviet claims of 127,572 feet in a year are questioned as Pravda credited a Pre Azov Trust crew near Krasnodar. Russian officials seek verification while noting other Denver Basin rigs surpassed the American mark.
President Eisenhower signed a bill boosting mailing rates starting August 1 raising costs for letters air mail postcards newspapers magazines and advertising matter. The measure also provides pay raises for about 520000 postal workers and signals potential raises for nearly a million civic service employees.
