Agricultural Act of 1949 Sets Price Support Principles
The Agricultural Act of 1949 remains the nation’s basic price support law, extended by Congress to 1954. It emphasizes three factors: differing commodity prices, producer choice of program by commodity, and automatic adjustment for price conditions. The act does not automatically support all farm commodities, requiring price supports for six basics within a 75 to range.
Agricultural price supports under the 1949 Act
The act sets varying price supports for commodities based on marketing quotas and producer approval. Basic commodities receive 90 percent equality when quotas are in effect. without quotas producers may disapprove supports at 50 percent. Tobacco gets 90 percent with quotas, else none. Non basic items like milk, tung nuts, honey, and wool receive 60 to 90 percent as designated by the Secretary, with potatoes initially 60 to 90 but later barred without quotas. National security can justify above 90 percent supports for designated commodities after hearings.
