Acres Burn At Nagengast Farm In Dalton Area

A Thursday fire at the Elmer Nagengast farm twelve miles west of Dalton burned about 10 acres of uncut wheat and 60 acres of wheat stubble. A pickup was heavily damaged after straw under the exhaust ignited. Everett Kurth cut trenches to contain the blaze as wind shifted flames, with Dalton Fire Department and neighbors extinguishing the fire after about an hour. up to 500 bushels of wheat lost and no injuries reported.

Congressman From Nevada Visits Here

Rep Walter Baring of Nevada and aide Robert Howard visited Sidney this morning at the home of Mr and Mrs Jack H Lowe. Howard is a nephew of the Lowes. Baring campaigns for the Sept 1 primary as a veteran Democrat House member. Howard is son of Mr and Mrs Don D Howard of FI.

Food Stamp Participation High in Cheyenne County

Cheyenne County Public Welfare director Virgil Knackstedt reports July's food stamp data: 541 recipients, 173 participating households. 79 on public assistance, 94 not. 237 public assistance cases. Coupon value $11,534 with $6,281.50 cash and $5,252.50 in bonus coupons issued. Guardians and conservators may handle purchases for those unable to attend.

Continuing Rains Beat Yearly Norm in County Areas

The county sees rainfall totals surpassing the 16 to 17 inch average with 17.21 inches in Sidney after seven months, aided by wet June and July. Dalton reports 13.14 inches, with monthly totals ranging from .01 to 3.65 inches. Rainfall varied Bob across locales, while temperatures stayed high and humidity kept evenings slow to cool.

Damage High In Accidents On Thursday

Two Thursday accidents caused heavy damage but only minor injuries. State Trooper Ron Gusman reported a 1968 Ford driven by Bonnie DeWeese rolled over on gravel four miles north and 9.3 miles east of Gurley, total loss, minor bruises. A 1969 Pontiac driven by Adoricion Roldan struck a stop sign near Potter's Front Street, $300 left front damage, sign and barrel demolished, but no one hurt.

Three Mishaps Reported In Sidney Police Log

The Sidney Police Department investigated three accidents over the past several days. Violet Meyer of 1536 Manor Road northbound on Manor Road collided with Sharon Fulton of 1104 9th who was southbound. Meyers car crossed center line. Dan Sherrerd of 1614 Maple traveling east on Illinois was struck by Helen Gould of Mt. Upton as Gould attempted to turn right into the outside lane at the 9th and Illinois intersection.

Farmers and elevators report a near record wheat harvest with rain delays and cutworm damage largely controlled. A week of slow cutting allowed grain movement and storage, while rye and oats harvests begin. Elevators report over one million bushels of wheat and 200,000 of rye and oats received. quality of oats is below ideal. Pfeil Driver Backing Crashes Parked Car in Town

Thursday evening a car driven by Mel Pfeil of 1922 Jackson backed from his home and struck a parked car owned by William Lorance of 1805 Maple. No injuries reported and police investigated the minor collision.

Lease Bids on former Sioux Depot leases delayed

A Cheyenne BLM spokesman said no bid date has been set for oil leases on the former Sioux Army Depot north of Sidney. Bid openings were cancelled amid interagency disputes over who disposes of the depot minerals, leaving 23 bids and checks tied up for 1590 acres. Industry bidders fear breach of contract and accruing interest if funds remain blocked. They allege good faith bidding and promised BLM authority. The Wednesday report of an opening date proved unfounded.
