A cloudburst dumped 1.75 inches of rain on Sidney in 15 minutes and drenched Cheyenne County. Winds hail and rain damaged irrigated corn and beets near Sidney and Potter, razing a corn stand and blooming beans, while most winter wheat remained intact.
A violent weather system originating near Cheyenne disrupted Nebraska Panhandle farms. Loring Tobler reports 100 percent loss of irrigated corn west of Sidney while Weyerts area north of Lodgepole saw heavy rain and pea sized hail. Some wheat damage near Potter and Maynard Mayer farm minimal. Storm split directions, causing flooding and moisture totals in Weyerts and southeast regions.
Hail damaged crops across Lodgepole Valley with corn beaten and beans hit at a crucial time. Farmers fear little chance of recovery for affected fields while some uncut areas were soaked but spared. A second hail patch near Potter ended harvest hopes for late cutters as violent weather looms ahead.
A severe storm dumped up to three inches in Sidney with 2.57 inches at the FAA flight service station and two inches at mid-town. Winds gusted to 63 mph, small hail battered streets, and underpasses flooded stranding a motorist with two children while pumps failed. Debris clogged drains, basements flooded, and closures lingered into the next day as authorities cleared the area.
Rainfall totals varied greatly from Dalton to Dix with reports of one inch at Dalton and half to four tenths elsewhere. Some areas saw hail and wind while Peetz had no rain. By Tuesday harvests neared completion at Potter and Dix reported light rains with hail east. A severe weather watch followed Monday night as storms dissipated with no clear pattern.
Farmers adopt a diversified harvest pattern, shifting from a wheat single-crop system to include millet rye oats and barley. Increased livestock feeding prompts earlier and longer harvests, with moisture challenges and a late storm complicating Cheyenne County’s wheat, leaving farmers pressed to secure returns from a year of work.
A Tuesday storm moved through southern Cheyenne County with four inch rain and damaging hail seven to eight miles south of Potter. It tracked east to drop an inch in the Sidney Draw and about a half inch at Lorenzo with an inch at Peetz while winds were strong in these zones. Light showers and minimal wind touched Sidney, Dalton, and Lodgepole as winds shifted NW and humidity dropped to 32 percent by noon per the FAA.
Partly cloudy this afternoon tonight and Thursday with widely scattered afternoon and evening thunder showers. Highs 85 to 95, lows 55 to 65. Rain chances 10 percent. The report notes dry days would aid harvest but forecasted conditions seem unlikely. Temperature data show Monday 52 to 90, Tuesday 57 to 86, and by noon today 60 to 84 with warm overall trends.
State Trooper Ken State investigated two crashes with heavy damage. A 1947 Chevrolet truck driven by Larry J. Schmitt overturned after a tie rod failure on a county road near Potter, injuring him lightly and totaling the vehicle and its rye load. On Tuesday near Gurley, a 1969 Chevrolet and a 1961 Volkswagen collided while blocked by trucks, causing $500 damage to Hinrichs and $250 to Troidl, with knee pain reported by Troidl.
DeAnna Jacobs, born May 12 at Chadron Community Hospital, has undergone her fourth operation in Denver to aid swallowing and remains in the hospital. Her mother, Mrs Jerry Jacobs, says another operation may be needed before discharge, likely not before a month. Weight after the latest surgery is five pounds, two ounces, two ounces more than birth weight. total costs near $30,000. Donations are being collected at Chadron banks and through Sidney Telegraph as a fund to help the family.
The Sidney Police Department reported two noninjury accidents over recent days. On Monday at 5 30 p.m. June K. Dawkins reported her car struck in Town & Country Market parking lot causing about 30 dollars in damage. On Tuesday at 10 15 a.m. Laura Young and Linda Lenzen collided in Legion Park with about 300 dollars damage to Lenzen’s car and a failure to yield the right of way charge to Lenzen. Young’s car sustained about 250 dollars damage.
The Scottsbluff Weather Bureau station will issue livestock weather safety statements with regular forecasts when dangerous weather for confined or shipping livestock is developing. A sample notice notes high temperatures in the low to mid 90s with high humidity pushing the livestock weather index into the dangerous category across the Nebraska Panhandle, advising precautions.
Sidney certifies its official budget and 1970 71 levy totaling 932 121 to be spent with 252 111 raised by taxes. Mill levy listed as 2001. fiscal year runs August 1 to July 31. Cheyenne County budget hearing opened this morning as commissioners prepare to certify by August 1 and expect a substantial levy reduction.
Cheyenne County Community Concert Series members will meet at the Chamber of Commerce offices on Wednesday August 5 at eight oclock. Larry Pippitt chair says plans for concert types and a strong membership drive will be discussed. Season tickets are set for Sept 28 to Oct 3 with three or four concerts likely depending on the drive. Talent price range is wide and several top acts are available for individuals or groups.
The State Highway Commission approved improvements on Nebraska Highway 71 near Harrisburg at its meeting on Friday July 24. The project includes grading structures shoulder surfacing and asphaltic concrete paving for about 78 miles north of the Harrisburg Spur Intersection. Construction is scheduled to begin in 1970.
Sidney Community Cable TV Co plans to switch to a new microwave tower on south Tenth Ave this week. The move will relink channels directly to Sidney, reducing signal loss and color problems. Manager Lloyd Wetenkamp notes Channel 3 will still map to Channel 5 on set, with other channels reordering. service should be restored by Friday after the midnight cutoff Thursday.

Hess Dyas, state Democratic party chairman, announces Sunday August 16 as Nebraska Democratic Candidates Day. All county organizations are urged to participate with emphasis on fundraising for this year’s campaigns. Counties will keep half of proceeds for their own candidates to broaden support from many small contributors.
Judy Kincaid 20 of Alliance died at a Kimball hospital after being struck by a car on Highway 30 Tuesday evening. The sheriff's office said she was walking along the highway about 3 14 miles west of Kimball when hit by Steven Vogel of Bushnell who reported the accident.
Ida Florence Weldy Wolf 84 died Monday at Memorial Hospital after three weeks as a patient. Funeral services were held at Gehrig and Son with Rev Stanley Ganzel of First United Methodist Church leading. Interment in Greenwood Cemetery. Born August 2 1886 in Dayton Ohio she married Herbert W Wolf November 29 1905. They farmed in Canada then near Flaxville Montana before moving to Sidney in 1948 to be near son Bill who ran an implement firm. Survived by no immediate relatives. preceded in death by husband two sons and one daughter. Memorials to First United Methodist Church.
A planning meeting for the 1970 Old Settlers Reunion in Lodgepole will be held at 8 30 p.m Friday in the First State Bank building. Chairmen and committee members are urged to be present.
The Nebraska Department of Roads admits a recently issued right-of-way map for Interstate 80 between Potter and Dix was incorrect. It failed to show a grade separation crossing about five miles east of Dix, likely between Sections 3 and 4 in Township 14, Range 53.
