Sidney budget hearing slated during delayed council meeting
Sidney will hold a public hearing on its 178 million dollar city budget Tuesday evening during the council meeting. The session was moved from Monday at the request of city clerk Gordon Tobin who is acting city manager and on vacation. The budget under review is 1 786 188 with an estimated 434 976 to be raised by personal property tax levy. Also on the agenda is a briefing from Howard Baker of Union Pacific Railroad on train speeds through Sidney. Other items include a drainage study for the Arlo Jones property by Olssen and Associates, Maurice Gordon’s request to extend sewer and water to a proposed trailer park outside city limits, ordinances to curb speeds on certain streets and raise parking meter fines, and plans for a new building at the city landfill. The Sidney Housing Authority will meet at 7 15 pm before the council session.

Thunderbirds jet crashes near Frontier Days grounds
A T38 trainer from the Air Force Thunderbirds crashed near the Frontier Days rodeo grounds in a rainstorm, killing the pilot and injuring a groundskeeper. A crew member ejected unharmed. Officials said the jet nosed into a vacant field as the pilot attempted to land.
