Depot facilities boost Sidney bid for state tech school

A Nebraska Senate study committee toured Sioux Army Depot in Sidney praising its buildings shop equipment housing and utilities. If available for school use the depot could allow a Vo Tech or private industry to begin with minimal state investment, strengthening Sidney’s push ahead of January legislative sessions.

Rain and Thunderstorm Hit County With Flooding in Spots

Rain and a loud thunderstorm swept Cheyenne County last night and today. Reported heavy rainfall near Dalton and scattered showers elsewhere produced small fires from lightning. Highway 30 motorists saw a bright lightning display and a cloudburst near Hay Springs. Temperatures rose from 56 to 94 Fahrenheit with high humidity. The Scottsbluff Weather Bureau forecast above normal highs in the 90s and scattered thundershowers through Saturday.

Sidney Among Seven Nebraska Cities Cuts Mill Levy for 1964 65

Sidney shrinks its tax mill levy for 1964 65 as part of a state wide move by seven Nebraska cities. The cut is offset by higher property valuations and may be unused if budgeted funds are unnecessary for airport expansion. Other cities lowering levies include Hastings Columbus Norfolk Alliance North Platte and Kearney with small reductions.

City Council Meeting Sees Two Zoning Hearings

The council will hear two zoning change proposals and discuss blinker lights at 13th and Forrest Street. They will also consider armor coating Toledo Street from the park entrance to the new Lodgepole Creek bridge. Meeting starts at 7:30 p.m. in the municipal building council rooms.

Air Service Plan Could Bridge Nebraska Education Trade Gap

Nebraska Department of Aeronautics hired Washington consultant Albert W. Gotch to draft a five to ten year master plan for state air service. State Aeronautics Director James Landstedt and attorney Rush C. Clarke announced the study at a luncheon with Omaha and Lincoln chamber reps. The plan aims to reduce regional divisions by creating a stable, quota-free air network linking eastern and western Nebraska with Colorado and Wyoming, covering commercial general and military aviation and assessing airports. Gotch will tailor a statewide program, with updates and periodic reviews, and may offer local Nebraskan communities consultant services as needed.

Three Cars Collide At 19 Junction

A three car collision at about 11 a.m. Sunday near the junction of Highway 19 and City Route 19 south of Sidney injured three people. Mrs. Carrie Ruhter and Ernest G. Ruhter, 74, of Sidney, were hospitalized for a fractured kneecap. Horst Eric Behr, 29, of Glendale California, and Lorraine Ellen Behr, 23, were treated and released for minor injuries. Vehicles involved were a 1959 Oldsmobile driven by Ruhter valued at about 250 dollars, a 1962 Chevrolet Monza driven by Michael H. Johnson, 23, Papillion valued at 25 dollars, and a 1962 Porsche owned by Behr valued at 2,000 dollars. Police said Ruhter attempted a left turn onto City Route 19, Behr swerved to avoid a head on and was struck, Johnson’s car then hit Behr’s vehicle.

Illinois Street Scene of Sunday Morning Mishaps

Sidney police investigated two minor accidents on Illinois Sunday morning July 26. At 9:20 a trailer pulled by Marlena D Jobman veered into Jack W Books’s parked car. About an hour later at 10:53 a car driven by Gladys F Farrow was rear ended by Gary L Jensen causing about $25 in damage to Farrow’s vehicle.

Clancy the Beagle Interjects in Circus Show

An unscheduled dog versus chimp act surprised matinee crowds at the King Brothers Circus, sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars. The Sharp family children brought their beagle Clancy, who lunged into the ring chasing the chimp before calm was restored and Clancy returned to spectators.

Mishaps At Thirteenth And Illinois Continue

At 3 45 p m on 13th and Illinois Ruth Johnson 17 left turned onto a one way side street striking bicycle rider Gary Caster 14. Caster sustained minor injuries and the bicycle was wrecked. Later at 9 55 p m a brake hose broke on Rex Boehnke 17 striking Terry Adams 16 who was stopped at a red light. Damages totaled about 275 with Eudanne Brandson 27 treated at Memorial Hospital for bruises and released.
