Water Well Boosts Sidney Supply With No Rationing
Water Commissioner Floyd Lanks announced the new Legion Park southwest well will pump about 1,000 gallons per minute and remove the threat of water restrictions. The city now has five wells plus a planned sixth near 19th and Osage, part of a $300,000 improvement program. First water to the underground reservoir expected between August 1 and 10, with 650,000 gallons stored in north town tanks. A new eight inch loop main replaces the old four inch line, improving pressure citywide.

Arraignment Held On Check Charge After Two Years
Hershel Horton 25 appeared in Cheyenne County Court after two years and one day on a forgery complaint. He pleaded guilty to uttering a forged instrument, bound over to district court with a $500 bond. Horton, alias Tomas Lind, allegedly wrote a $35 check on Walter Miller of Potter dated July 11 1952. complaint filed July 25 1952. He had earlier been jailed for car theft and released from Leavenworth after 23 months. He waived extradition to Sidney.

Damage Near $1000 From Two Thursday Crashes
Two separate noninjury crashes last Thursday caused about $1000 in total damage. In Sidney a taxi driven by 16 year old Jerry Clark was hit on the right rear by Clarence Cartmill, 36, from Jacksonville, Florida at 13th and Illinois Streets causing about $300 in damage. Four and a half miles east of Gurley on a county road a head on sideswipe between Walter Weyerts, 24, of Dalton and Jack Pearce, 22, of Dalton resulted in about $650 damage, Weyerts’s 1952 car taking most of the impact.

Lost Fireworks Scare Enlivens Cheyenne County Prison Transport
Cheyenne County Sheriff Bill Schulz was moving two prisoners to Lincoln when his 14 year old son Gerald placed firecrackers in the rear ashtray. On the trip to the state penitentiary the crackers exploded after cigaret ashes were dropped in the tray. The blast frightened the prisoners who believed they were under fire.

A Lodgepole native is expected to command a major fortune following the death of W. L. Moody of Galveston Texas. Moody valued around 400 million dollars. His longtime chief assistant W. L. Kansas-Nebraska plans a 12 inch gas pipeline expansion from the Big Springs Gas Field in Devel County into Cheyenne County to boost capacity by 300. The project, worth 5 to 6 million dollars, is by Brodie Construction Co. and aims for completion by Sept 1. New routes will connect Huntsman to Northport and on to Alliance, with old eight inch line soon dismantled.

Driver Grains Through Week With Two Mishaps VA
Joe Granillo 22 of the Sioux Ordnance Depot had a rough week. On Monday his car struck pedestrian Wilma Benkusky as she crossed at Tenth Avenue and Illinois Street. Friday a rear impact from Byron Binger 42 of Sidney bumped Granillo at 13th Avenue and Illinois Street. Damages about 200 dollars.

Two new wildcat oil wells, farmouts from Ohio Oil Co., are under drilling in Cheyenne County. Former No. 1 D sand test produced 1 725 barrels of salt water in 75 minutes from 4 493 to 4 513 feet. Pitman No. 1 near Gurley also proceeds, with Ohio adding another gasser to West Sidney Field after Kurz No. 1 yielded 2 835 000 cubic feet per day. Rapp No. 1 gas well completed in first Dakota formation at 5 288 000 cubic feet. Lost-pipe fishing continues at Lee Hagemeister No. 1 near Potter. Emma Mahr No. 1 reported as a potential dry hole in Logan County.

The Rev. T. Porter Bennett, 75, a former Methodist minister who served in Ravenna, Sidney, Grand Island, York, Falls City, Broken Bow, Hallam, Tekamah, Ashland, and Plattsmouth, died in Lincoln last Friday after arriving in Nebraska in 1917 from Michigan where he led pastorates since 1900.

Thieves Loot Cars Part Of Loot Found
Sneak thieves hit five automobiles Saturday night and Sunday morning, four in Sidney on Ninth Avenue near the post office. From Ray Hillernd’s car six sample shoe cases and a records briefcase were stolen but the shoes were later found. Bob Stohler reported two sweaters a jacket and an Indian blanket taken from his car. Kenneth Henzel lost a blue jacket. Robert Maguire’s car was entered but nothing stolen. The Helfrich car yielded a camera and glasses after two windows and the windshield were broken. The thieves headed east from Sidney.

Hay spillage clips highway traffic near state line
About 200 bales of hay fell from a truck driven by Harvey Carpenter of Ft. Morgan Colo at the junction of State Highway 19 and US 30. Traffic narrowed to one lane as nine bales burst. Carpenter was fined $5 plus costs by the Nebraska Safety Patrol for the spill, attributed to excess speed on the hill.

Funeral Services Are Held For Mrs Bailey
Funeral services were held at 2 30 p m Monday for Mrs Martha Bailey 18 Cheyenne County s third traffic fatality of the year. She was fatally injured the day after a two car accident south of Sidney Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery Sidney Services were from the Methodist Church here the same church in which Mrs Bailey was married eight days before.
