In grave times, St Patrick's church plans a Military High Mass on Wednesday August 1 at 8 30 A M. The service will feature special music and flags decorating the sacred edifice. All are invited, especially men able to be called to the colors.
Gustafson and his wife of Mead Nebraska stayed overnight last Saturday at the home of C J Osborn. Gustafson serves as the state president of the Farmers' Union.
The Sidney Neb 1917 city council met in regular session with Mayor E L Uptegrove and five councilmen present. The warrant for 1000 to FE McLernon was ordered paid. An ordinance creating five thousand dollar water extension bonds and five thousand dollar sewer bonds was introduced and passed as No 160. Meeting adjourned.
The Mercantile store is about to move its mens clothing department into a new building. The current building has been leased to Virgil Marsh, who will stock it with a jewelry line and plans to open by August first.
The region has seen a week of extreme heat with temperatures around 102 on Tuesday and rising trends for the next days. Harvesting of fall wheat has begun, likely yielding poorer quality and volume due to insufficient rain, while roads remain rough from west to Cheyenne Mount, and a brief rain Wednesday night did not reach the north.
A north river country couple and Mrs. Couch s father visited Goshen Hole seeking homesteads. They praised the uplands as level and green but disliked the river bottoms drenched by irrigation. They warn irrigation requires careful water use to avoid harming cultivation and note uplands yield better crops over time.
Recruits shipped out from here Thursday by Major McWhinley include Clinton C. McCaig of Brady Missouri, Churchill B. Brooks of Mexico Missouri, John Buchanan of Eldon Missouri, Clyde II Tomsett, Sidney. Others slated to ship Monday or Tuesday are Roy Sparger of St. Joe, George D. Macé of Clarke Nebraska, Leonard J. Jackson of Sunol, and John Hornicek of Sunol.
Social and Club Affairs report a well attended Eastern Star meeting on Wednesday night. George Taylor presented a pin to Past Worthy Matron Mrs J J Mc Intosh for six years of service, which she accepted with warm words. A similar gift for Past Worthy Patron H Schroeder did not arrive in time. Mrs J A Nicholson resigned as secretary and Mrs P W Barker was elected to fill the vacancy.
In tribute to ten years of faithful Dorcas work, Mrs Nicholson received a Saturday afternoon reception at the Radcliffe home. Mrs Radcliffe and daughter Ann welcomed more than thirty guests and served refreshments. A cut glass dish was presented by Miss Ann Radcliffe as thanks before Mrs Nicholson departs for her new home in Council Bluffs.
The W C T U will hold a business meeting on the first Friday in August the third of the month in the Rest Room of the court house. Elections of officers will be held and every member is urged to attend.
The Helping Hand society gathered Wednesday with Mrs. F. A. Hand and enjoyed three hours of visiting and excellent refreshments. Attendance was lighter due to harvest work. Miss Hajok was the sole guest. The group plans to meet August six with Mrs. Hansen.
A cream wool baby coat was lost Thursday between Sidney and the W. C. Couch ranch. Finder's reward and return should be made to The Sidney Telegraph office.
A. H. Clemens advertises good wages for a ranch hand job located three miles east of Sidney. No further details provided.
New completed bungalow offering seven rooms with modern styling and a basement laundry. Mrs A Lindberg advertised the property for quick sale in a concise notice.
Sam Fine joined celebrations in Cheyenne this week. J L Rezanina and mother traveled to Cheyenne Thursday to attend Frontier and visit relatives. Mrs J W Brobst of Lewisville, an early settler here, visits C W Osborn's this week. Miss Huldah Lindberg of the Telephone Exchange and her sister Mrs HW Garber were in Cheyenne Monday and Tuesday. About forty Altar society members met at Mrs J Ruttner's near Sundl Wednesday afternoon. J and Glassburn sold his farm in Sidney Draw and plans to wander for months before settling anew. Landlord Scott at the National Cafe placed an electric player piano for guests. Frontier Day drew many locals to Cheyenne. many went by auto, others by train for a day trip.

John Pantenburg and George Ahrens completed a around the world car journey last week. They traveled routes including a leg by Denver and stopped in Cheyenne for Frontier Days before returning on Wednesday.
Mr and Mrs C W West returned Thursday noon from a two weeks visit to several states the farthest from here being Kentucky. They had a good trip with cool weather accompanying them everywhere.
Paul Borgquist and family will depart soon for an extended stay in Ogden Utah. Upon return he will conduct a sale of his horses at the U P Stockyards on August 11.
Twenty five women began work at the machine shops near Lincoln at Havelock to fill places left by men called to the army. They wear overalls and caps and tackle heavy jobs, marking a notable shift in labor during the war effort.
Reverend Mr and Mrs Cram and daughter Katherine arrived Tuesday evening from North Platte to visit Mrs Cram s parents Reverend and Mrs Lewis until Monday. They plan to continue their auto trip to Estes Park.
Dr J E Swatzlander W B E Swatzlander and Bert Swatzlander piloted cars carrying their families and camping gear to the west ward last Thursday and planned to pitch camp near Arlington Wyoming.
S Dedrick and wife Russell Dedrick and Miss Edna Rowan returned Wednesday of last week from a three weeks automobile trip. The larger cities visited were Cheyenne Laramie and Denver. Miss Nellie remained for a longer visit.
Julesburg won the Sunday matchup against Sidney by eight to three as a fair crowd endured the heat. The Red Cross received ten percent of the proceeds with a commission near twenty dollars.
The Sidney Loan and Building Association held its annual meeting Wednesday evening and elected officers H. T. Doran as President A. Granneman as Vice president T. A. Barlow as Secretary and L. Neubauer as Treasurer A four percent dividend was declared which brings the year total to nine percent.
Judge Grimes visited last week and sentenced Clark to six months in the pen for forgery. Sheriff Sitton took him down Monday, returning Wednesday morning. The week had little crime before Judge Chambers and few drunks before Judge McCleneghan, with dwindling numbers noted.
The daily papers report the Master List of registrations has been sent from the Federal government to the states. The governor will have it soon and county boards will receive it within a day or two. The lists have some inaccuracies, so the official list will set minds at ease.

Sidney Council Knights of Columbus initiated its second class last Sunday with large attendance. Delegations from Sterling Colorado and Hastings Nebraska performed the ceremony from Solemn High Mass at 9:30 AM to six PM, followed by a banquet and post prandial entertainment with speakers including Rev. Anton Link Rev. Martin Lawler Judge Geo Corcoran of Hastings L. G. Giacomini of Sterling Dr. W. L. Sucha of Hastings W. T. Miles of Sidney and John B. McGauran of Denver Toastmaster J. L. McIntosh chaired as guests congratulated the committee in charge.
The county farmers union picnic drew over five hundred attendees last Saturday at Krueger's grove. A real dinner, a literary program with State President C H Gufstason of Mead Nebraska as chief speaker, swimming and ball games followed. Miss Leona Oberfelder is in Cheyenne this week.
Exemption boards across districts will meet once the official numbers list arrives from Washington via Governor Neville. The procedure aims to curb newspaper errors from copying, transmission, identification, typing, and proofreading. Each drafted individual may present exemptions. boards may be appealed to a state board and then to the president. Nebraska forms two appeal boards split north and south of the Platte, with direct presidential appeal available.
Thomas Gibbons of Denver and Irene Nichols of St Louis wed at the county court house on July 20 in a ceremony conducted by the county judge. The couple hopes to start a life together with plans soon.
