Social Security Increases Begin October For 1600 District Families
About sixteen hundred people in the Scottsbluff district will receive higher Social Security payments starting in October after President Truman signed the amendments. No application is needed as the admin is adjusting amounts, with checks mailed by October 3 if possible. Increases range from 5 to 8.60 dollars monthly per retiree, averaging six dollars, with family increases up to about 18.90 dollars. The law updates earnings bases and wage credits for military service, updates lump sum death benefits, and raises monthly earnable amounts to still qualify for benefits.

State Levy Near as No Hike Is Expected
The 1952 state tax levy will be set in about 10 days and should not exceed last year’s 6.59 mills. Nebraska’s total assessed valuation is expected to top 3.0 billion dollars again, with 1951 at 3,014,247,550. Debt relief noted as the “lost billion” recovered, though 1952 may face declines in some lines from the prior year’s poor corn crop and livestock prices. Most counties report increases with Douglas County among the exceptions.
