The article notes severe wheat crop damage in Cheyenne County during 1952 from a heat wave in early June and multiple damaging hail storms on June 25 to 27 and July 13. Producers faced a three million bushel loss as south table winter wheat suffered relentless destruction.
The Dalton and surrounding Cheyenne County areas rush to finish harvest as hot dry weather accelerates field work. North Cheyenne reports No. 1 grain quality and averages near 18 bushels per acre countywide, with regional variations from zero to 50 bushels.
A heavy wheat fire near Colton destroyed a combine and about twenty acres of wheat at the Ernest Frerichs farm three miles east and eight north of Colton. The Sidney Volunteer Fire Department responded after exhaust from the combine started the blaze. Earlier, at 1:30 p.m., firefighters were summoned to the John Sell farm for a stubble-field fire sparked by a passing train.
The Sidney Community Hotel project advances toward bids after recent huddles. The board awaits the architect from St. Louis with a final design for a fifty one room four story building at Ninth Avenue and Jackson Street including lobby dining banquet rooms coffee shop and cocktail lounge. Funds pledged remain partially unpaid but are expected to be collected as construction readiness grows.
Rites were held for two premature infants weighing one and a half pounds at birth. Candace Jileen Schilling, daughter of Dennis and Mrs. Schilling of Sioux Ordnance Depot, born July 16 in a Sidney hospital, died two days later. Debora Jean Boyle, daughter of Alfred and Mrs. Boyle, died shortly after birth on July 13 and was buried at Greenwood Cemetery following services conducted by Rev. Fr. Wright Johnson.
Hugh Griffith a 40 year old man held on a first degree murder complaint for the shotgun slaying of his wife Anna on June 20 remains noncommittal in a city jail. He has refused to discuss the night of the slaying or provide a written confession. Griffith reportedly told Weld County Sheriff he killed her but later denied it. He may take a lie detector test but has not consented. If no break occurs he will stand trial in November before a twelve man jury with state and defense attorneys appointed.
The Sidney Chamber of Commerce will hold its next quarterly meeting on Tuesday night July 29 at The Yendis Cafe. Secretary George Kolzow reports 101 attendees and notes 34 percent member growth over last year.
The Antelope Construction Co held a weekend open house for a newly completed home on South 11th Avenue Grabhill Addition in Sidney. Company officials voiced strong satisfaction and thanked attendees for their support boosting confidence among prospective Sidney home builders. Ralph L. Olsen Melvin C. Adams and Dean Stettner cited team efforts in construction and decoration.
Frontier Refining Co of Denver reports the Shorts No 1 wildcat in NW SE of Section 17 13 51 in Cheyenne County shows 630 feet of oil and gas cut mud in the D or G sand with gas reaching the surface in twelve minutes Though not yet commercial the find marks first oil traces in the area in three years Ohio Oil Co has two additional near term testing locations Miller No 1 and Jurgens No 2 with drilling depths noted. Miller 3910 feet and Jurgens in Kugler field SE SE SE of Section 32 15 48.
Kimball County reports first state school section oil strike from Vaughey and Vaughey State No 1 located about sixteen miles southeast of Kimball. The drill stem test showed 1 170 feet oil, offsetting Goodwin No 1 on land owned by F L Goodwin of Sidney. If commercial, the state would receive twelve and one half percent of oil sold. Production will take time due to material shortages. A shut in gas well on state land in Cheyenne County near Sidney was drilled by Ohio Oil Co awaiting market.
Oil firms intensify wildcat ventures despite steel strikes. In Cheyenne County six active or planned wells target new zones, with Sinclair and Ohio Oil among operators. BA plans a 60 thousand acre Cherry County test near Merriman, while Lehmkuhl No. 1 near Lodgepole awaits an early start.
Funeral rites were held in Lodgepole for Daniel Ray Brestel nine who died after being struck by a one ton pickup on a Deuel County road near his farm. The driver Kenneth French twenty of Hassell Oklahoma swerved to avoid the child and the truck overturned but tests showed no alcohol. The boy, born September 2 1943, was a member of the First Baptist Church in Sidney and is survived by his parents a brother and a sister.
The Rev R Wright Johnson rector of Christ Church since 1949 has submitted his resignation to the vestry to accept a role as chaplain and instructor at St Martin's Episcopal School in Metairie Louisiana a New Orleans suburb. He expects to leave mid August. Christ Church has grown from mission to parish and expanded membership under his leadership while he also served St Hilda's Kimball until a full-time rector was assigned.
Two Iowans from Scranton Dorothy Carstens 27 and Wilbur Carstens 22 died when their car left Highway 30 east of Chappell Nebraska, overturning and ejecting them. Sheriff noted dashboard time 12 15 a m. cause believed loss of control while attempting to right the vehicle.
The Tele gram urges immediate center stripe maintenance on Highway No. 30 between Chap pell and Big Springs after a fatal Sunday accident. The paper notes the route draws about four thousand tourist vehicles daily and calls for safer roads despite limited highway funds.
During the week of July 20 to 26 a National Farm Safety Week was proclaimed by President Truman. The observance, sponsored by the Agriculture Department and the National Safety Council, urged farmers in Cheyenne County and across the nation to prioritize safety during harvest season and reduce farm accidents. Secretary Brannan noted improvements in injury data but urged greater effort as farm output rises to meet national and international needs.
