Wheat combines began cutting again in Cheyenne County as dry weather returns after a week of storms. Officials map a potential record harvest with rain threats easing, noting irrigated zones show strong yields and wild clover blooms along roadsides offer possible extra feed.
Sheriff’s deputies report Ralph Campbell 29 Hutchinson Kansas was arrested for passing forged checks. He pleaded not guilty and requested a preliminary hearing set for July 25 in County Court. Bond 1000, jailed in Cheyenne County awaiting bond. Deputies Brumbaugh and Morris handled the arrest. Other suspects remain at large.
P. W. Barker, well known Sidney businessman, was released from Kimball Hospital today after a Thursday evening collision on Route 20. Heavy rain reduced visibility. Barker’s car struck the rear of a pickup truck, causing facial lacerations and chest and back bruises.
Charles B. Harris of Sidney serves as a storekeeper third class aboard the heavy cruiser Des Moines. He helped lead Marines at Lebanon earlier this month to reinforce the occupation force alongside the cruiser squadron.
Mrs. Joan Hart, welfare director, reports a surge in requests for aid as harvest delays strand workers. Salvation Army offers fifty cents per person and five gallons of gas, while Red Cross aid remains unused. The approach aims to move families along rather than provide ongoing support due to tax fund limits.
Nearly 90 boys and girls under George Hinns direction perform six numbers in the first half at 8 p.m. at the bandshell. Assistant instructors include William Fankhauser Julianne Westfall Judy Ziegler Jimmy Knicely and Gail Nelson. The second half features the regular summer band.
William F. Wolff 75 died early this morning at Cheyenne County Memorial Hospital after a lengthy illness. A Sidney resident for 20 years, he was a retired farmer who had lived in Caledonia Minnesota Belle Fourche South Dakota and Pecetz Colorado before moving to Sidney. Funeral services will be Saturday at 10 30 a m from Gehrig and Son Funeral Home with burial in Greenwood Cemetery. He was born September 2 1833 in Hokah Minnesota to Albert and Mathilda Wolff and married Lena Hadell in Caledonia October 6 1908. Survivors include his wife two daughters Mrs Kenneth Kilgore and Mrs Daniel Waggoner both of Laramie one son Harold W of Casper seven grandchildren two brothers and a sister.
Sioux Ordnance Depot awarded three contracts totaling 391 512 for building and water main improvements. The Standard Roofing and Material Co of Oklahoma City will replace roofs on nine warehouses for 174 609. Chris Levi Co of Holdrege will replace tarpaper siding with asbestos shingles on eleven warehouses for 119 273. William F Anderson Co of Holdrege bids 97 630 to replace about three miles of 12 inch water main. Work to start soon and finish within six months with local labor questions under study.
Ronnie Charles eight rides bike from alley into side of car driven by Clarence Whitten on 13th Avenue between Maple and Newton. He suffers only bruises per police investigation by Lt Ron Ahlberg and Lt Ervin Smith. no serious injuries reported.
The Sidney Chamber of Commerce retail committee finalized plans for two August events. Dollar Days runs August 14 15 and 16 with Lloyd Lockwood and Milton Handsel as co chairs. The Back To School promotion follows August 21 22 and 23 with a free movie courtesy of The Sidney Telegraph.
John E. Costello a former Sid ney resident and brother of Mrs Marguerite McMillen has been dismissed from a Dallas hospital after two major operations in three weeks He plans further surgery soon The Costello family moved from Sydney to Portland and back with Costello retiring from the Union Pacific yard job in January Cards can be sent to 322 Hedgeron Drive Dallas Texas.
Wheat was priced at 1.44 dollars per bushel by local elevator sources.
A hill crest head on crash on a county road eight miles east of Gurley at dusk Monday night killed three. The drivers and survivors include Loren Block of Lodgepole and Reid Block, a 13 month old, plus Donald Emmerson Schultz of Billings Oklahoma and William Henry Wright of Brownville Texas. Funeral services will be held in Brownville and Billings with arrangements by Gehrig and Son and Craig Mortuary.

Fitzgerald chief librarian at the National War College Ft McNair near Washington D C speak on Africa He has led War College field trips to several foreign regions and discussed economic political and military issues with the group He also spoke on Lebanon and local reactions There were 16 reservists and two visitors from Scottsbluff who attended the talk.
