State Railway Commission will hold a public hearing on Burlington Railroads request to discontinue Sunday operations of trains 41 and 44 between Alliance and Lincoln. Alliance chamber officials and local chambers notified. hearing date to be set. Government eyes safflower as soil bank substitute in Nebraska

University of Nebraska agronomist Walter F. Peterson says safflower could replace idle soil bank grasses in western Nebraska. He notes safflower oil has strong demand for paints and plastics and could outdo linseed oil, with Plains Oil Mills in Sidney backing the industry and seeking better strains to compete with wheat on dry land.

Ex Lodgepole Winner Named In 1956 Nebraska Story Contest

Rev Culver G Warner formerly of Lodgepole now in Pawnee City was announced as a 1956 Nebraska Old West Story Contest winner. His tale Coal Rustlers placed fifth among 250 plus entries. Merrill Mattes of Omaha won top prize of 100 dollars for Navigation of the Platte River. Others include Mrs Harry Yost Maxwell Henry Nestor Spalding Kent Buffington Enders. Judges were Coffey Srb Olson. The program promotes Nebraska as the Old West State for tourism.

Ellison Purchases Model Cleaners in Sidney

Warren Ellison announced the Aug 1 acquisition of Model Cleaners from Ed Sayre and John Spence. Spence stays with the business, Roy Ollierius manages. Ellison will maintain the prior policy. Sayre has been away due to ill health. Ellison previously ran a Tampa self service laundry from 1946 to 1949 and is now a Winter Drug pharmacist.

Fire crews battle wheat stubble blaze near Lorenzo

Sidney firemen responded at 12 25 p m yesterday to quell a wheat stubble fire located one quarter mile east of Lorenzo.

Nebraska oil output hits another weekly high

Nebraska's daily crude oil production rose to 45,961 barrels last week, up from the prior week's 45,961 barrel level. Most output comes from Panhandle fields with little Cheyenne County activity, bar one well, Thompson No. 1 in Thompson Field near the Sioux Ord Depot gate.

Nebraska Wheat Quotas Pass Nationally Despite Local Swift Rejection

In Cheyenne County Nebraska 145 voted for quotas and 146 against while statewide 11 844 supported marketing controls and 3 301 opposed for the 1957 wheat crop. Nationally the quota measure carried with about 80 percent support, promising a two dollar per bushel support price and penalties for excess acreage.

Funeral Today for Castleberry Infant

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. for Stephen Gene Castleberry infant son of Mrs Norma Castleberry from Gehrig and Son Funeral Home. The child died at birth Saturday in Memorial Hospital. Rev. R L Townsend officiated and burial was in Greenwood Cemetery. Survivors include his mother twin sister Linda Lee one brother Daniel Leroy and grandparents Mr and Mrs J D Warner of Sidney.

Duplicate Vehicle Crash Injures Three Near Sidney

A two-vehicle collision at the east junction of Highways 30 and 19 near Sidney injures three people, including San Francisco resident Verna Hutchinson. A 1955 pickup driven by Jerry Hill collided head on with Hutchinson’s 1948 car, causing $750 in damage and serious injuries to Hutchinson. The incident mirrors a June 30 crash at the same spot. a stop sign request tied to that event may have been approved.

Suit Filed for $85,000 Over Ditch Accident in Sidney

Fred Meick of Sidney sues Western Utilities Constructors Co in district court for $85,000 claiming a seven foot deep, unbarricaded open ditch in an alley behind his home at 1145 Fifth Ave caused a serious back fracture. The suit alleges negligence for daylight excavation not properly lit or barricaded and for failing to warn.

George Burr to Join Omaha Firm From Sidney Practice

George Burr, attorney with Thorpe and Burr, will leave Sidney on August 1 to join Hawkeye Casualty Insurance Co in Omaha. He has served with J L Thorpe since February 1955. Thorpe expects to announce Burr’s successor soon.

Illinois Street To Be Painted This Week

City to repaint Illinois Street also known as Highway 30 this week. A State Highway Department crew will paint centerline stripes and install directional lane signs to guide traffic flow in Sidney.

Agronomist Warns Against Planting Karmont Wheat in West Nebr

University of Nebraska extension agronomist J C Swinbank cautions western Nebraska farmers not to seed Karmont winter wheat. He cites dwarf bunt disease risk, lack of yield or quality advantage over Nebred and Cheyenne, and notes Karmont is more susceptible to dwarf bunt based on USDA tests and comparisons with Kharhof Yogo and Turkey varieties.

Out Of Prison Back In Jail For Floyd Barton

Former Sidney resident Floyd Barton was released on parole from the Colorado State Penitentiary and greeted by Cheyenne County Deputy Sheriff Bart Taylor. A warrant charged Barton with writing a $60 no funds check in Cheyenne County on November 27, 1954. County Judge C W Smith bound Barton over to the district court on a $500 bond. Barton had earlier served a county jail term in Sidney for a bad check.
