General Cutting Finally Is Going In High Gear

Harvesting speeds up in the Sidney area as rain delays ease. Banner County reports 15 percent reduced yields and most fields won t be ready before Sunday while Deuel Kimball Cheyenne and Alliance count progress and labor conditions. Many custom cutters return home broke as Dakotas and Montana fleets wait for better weather.

Fire drill draws 186 vehicles despite appeal

Fire Chief Bob Hessle says motorist crowds ignored a Wednesday appeal to stay clear of fire scenes. A Thursday drill at the Fair Grounds drew 186 automobiles, about 43 entering the grounds, risking obstruction of firefighting equipment and traffic. Violators may face tickets under city ordinances mandating 300 feet clearance from moving trucks and fire scenes.

New Grain Dryer Improves Harvest In Wet Year

Howard Kurz of Lorenz introduces a John Deere grain dryer capable of drying 200 bushels per hour at 16 percent moisture. The system promises crop savings in wet years, reduced field losses via earlier harvest, and uniform drying through blending and moving grain.

Sidney Posts Record Six Airline Passengers Per Day

Frontier Airlines reports Sidney averaged six passengers per day in June, topping the Civil Aeronautics Board minimum. Deplaned 139, boarded 120, with 114 of 120 departures flown due to weather, marking the highest four month period of operations. Cooler Days Seen In Weather View

Slightly cooler temperatures are forecast for the Sidney area over the next five days. Through Wednesday highs should be in the 80s with overnight lows 55 to 60. The mercury may reach 85 tomorrow after a 60 degree night. Scattered thundershowers are expected late tomorrow afternoon and precipitation through Wednesday is around one quarter inch.

Carnival Set to Tour Sidney With San Antonio Show

Volunteer firemen of Sidney sponsor Alamo Ex position at Grabill Addition on south Ilth Ave next week. The carnival offers 17 rides and side shows including Fun House Monkey Giant Ape. Rides include Scrambler bumper cars Rock-O-Plane Roll-O-Plane Merry-Go-Round Tilt-a-whirl Octopus and kiddies rides Shetland ponies auto ride airplane ride and Tubs of Fun. Grounds admission is free. The six night run starts Monday. The San Antonio outfit is described as high caliber with courteous employees.

Young horsemen begin 530 mile trek toward Frontier Days

Twenty one youths and six adults ride from Diamond B Bar C ranch in Iowa toward Cheyenne Wyoming as part of a 530 mile horseback trek. They stopped in Sidney for rest and were hosted by the Saddle Club grounds and local police escort. A break at Potter and a Kimball stop featured a ninth birthday party for Douglas Oshly before continuing toward Cheyenne with hopes for showers and a warm reception.

26-Year-Old Pipeline Worker Fatally Shot Near Kimball

The body of William E. Smith, 26, a pipeline employee living southeast of Potter, was found with a head wound in what authorities describe as a personal safety related shooting. Sheriff W. W. Schulz said Smith's death occurred about 11:30 a.m. His wife in Charlotte could not be reached. he reportedly faced financial trouble. Gehrig and Son Funeral Home of Sidney is handling arrangements.

Oil Lease Sale Approval by State Board of Educational Lands

The State Board ratified oil and gas lease sales on 23 755 acres of school lands for 37 672 dollars. Secretary Elmer H Mahlin said the board also decided to invest 30000 dollars in 3 percent government bonds maturing Feb 15 1964 bought at a discount earning about 4 percent. The 307000 dollars is allocated to the permanent school fund 150000 dollars the agricultural college endowment fund 5000 dollars the permanent university fund 2000 dollars and the Nebraska veterans fund income 150000 dollars.

Mercer Meetings Set For Six Districts

Mercer School District 5 members plan a July 30 meeting at 10 am in the courthouse to judge the validity and sufficiency of signatures from 59 percent of voters. Japanese agr attaché explores U S hard wheat markets in Great Plains

Hideo Tokoro, Japanese agricultural attaché in Washington, spent days in the Great Plains exploring U S wheat purchases. He met with Cheyenne County Wheat Growers in Sidney and will report recommendations to Tokyo. He cites transport costs and seeks competitive bidding between Canada and the United States to boost Japan's hard wheat imports.

Five construction jobs totaling 73 891.01 dollars will be created at the Sioux Ordnance Depot over four months. Farmers Urged Save Samples For County Fair

Cheyenne County Agent Ivan Lil jegren urged farmers to save two quart samples for the wheat show at the county fair next month. He noted expected good quality entries and allowed a sheaf display of grain bundles about two inches in diameter. Wheat oats barley millet and other crops would make fine sheaf displays. Certified seed producers in Cheyenne County oversee the local wheat show.

Final Interment Held For Carl J. Hellwig

At 9 30 a m today the ashes of Carl John Hellwig were interred at Greenwood Cemetery with Rev. Fred Parks officiating. He died in July at the age of 84 and is survived by his wife and two step sons. Craig Mortuary handled arrangements.
