Safflower Acreage To Double Next Year Says Ag Director

Lincoln farmer Pearl F. Finigan visited western Nebraska to review safflower and combine operations. At Sidney mill, manager Ned Robinson said 35 000 acres contracted this year with plans to double next year. Sidney processes 12 000 to 15 000 tons of safflower. market growing as cattle feed and edible oil rise in use.

Rural district mergers set for Cheyenne County hearings

Six Cheyenne County rural districts face merger hearings that could cut total districts from 30 to 24, affecting about 70 students who may transfer to Deuel County. Districts 2 144 48 5 72 and 40 hold meetings July 23 24 and 30 at the courthouse to gauge petition validity and potential dissolutions and mergers with Sidney Lodgepole Potter Sunol and other districts.

Long distance calls at Sidney Northwestern Bell Tele phone Co reached an all time high of 3435 on Monday as the Sidney office handles calls from Bushnell Chappell Dix Gurley Kimball Lodgepole Potter and Sidney. The harvest season boosts staffing with six extra operators for a total of 47.

Thone Elected State Republican Chairman in Nebraska

Charles Thone, 35, of Lincoln was named the new state Republican chairman, succeeding Richard Speirs Jr. of Grand Island. Thone had just resigned as administrative assistant to Senator Roman Hruska to return to private law practice in Lincoln. About 100 party members met in Grand Island on Wednesday to approve the change.

The Telegraph reports no Cheyenne County groups have applied for bingo licenses though several organizations plan to. State bingo director Pearl Finigan says statewide applications are about 100 and that activity remains slow with churches and VFW and Jaycees weighing when to apply.

Port Lights Airport Turnoff Lights From State Cable

City takes surplus cable from Nebraska to install blue turnoff lights at the airport taxi strip. City Manager Tom Coffey says the cable, obtained from federal surplus via Harvard, Nebraska, was secured at no cost after contacting the governor and state aeronautics department. The lights add a safety factor at the airport.

In Kimball a statewide ice melting contest ended early Tuesday. First prize goes to Mrs. F. E. Hendrix for guessing the 10 tons would melt at 7 31 am, last chip at 7 30 am minus 55.2 seconds. about 10,000 entrants since last Thursday. She wins 1000 in merchandise including a 17 foot home freezer. CAP To Gather Flight Data At Potter Kimball For FAA

Twenty nine members of the Sidney Civil Air Patrol Squadron begin a four day survey for the FAA at Bar J Lazy V south of Potter Nelson airport north west Kimball and Kimball municipal airport. The data will include weather aircraft types and operations to forecast air traffic through 1980. Major Pat Heaton Jr and Allen Karnik direct the effort with data from 700 civil and 350 military fields nationwide.

Three Sidney Teens Face Vandalism and Auto Theft Charges

Three Sidney teenagers are charged in a vandalism case involving a pickup truck left near Brownson. Richard Downing faces auto theft charges. Gary Barnard and David Campbell, both 17, face juvenile delinquency charges. The truck was driven six miles and toppled over a 20 foot cliff, causing about $200 damage to a Sterling firm's vehicle. Campbell is on parole for the same incident. Downing is serving a state reformatory term for an attempted jailbreak at Bridgeport. Barnard was returned by California authorities after enlisting in the Navy.
