Wheat harvest slows across Cheyenne County in midweek showers

A brief shower and foggy mornings slow wheat cutting with humidity. Chappell and Lodgepole report harvest mostly complete with 40 to 50 bushel yields and excellent grain quality. Final laps in Cheyenne County require a hot dry weekend to finish. elevators report ample storage yet space tight on the north south route.

Braver recalls wheat farming milestones over decades

John Braver traces almost six decades of winter wheat farming in western Nebraska. He notes milestones including summer fallowing and the combine, plus research yielding better wheat varieties. He recalls arriving from Fairbury in 1919, harvesting with a binder, threshing crew labor, and the first 12-foot Baldwin combine bought for 1500 dollars in 1929 after initial skepticism.

State Highway Dept Plans Five Year Projects

Wrong turn leads youths to Sidney Pizza Hut stop

A group of 41 East Coast teens on a bus tour from Denver to Mt. Rushmore was briefly lost in Sidney when the driver took a wrong turn and stopped near the Post Office. They ended up in a Pizza Hut, sampled Nebraska hospitality, and resumed plans after local guidance. Tours are run by Brooklyn and Long Island leaders, with future west coast stops planned.

Ring returns to its owner after sewer find

Jim Trowbridge of the Sidney sanitation department found a corroded 1952 Sidney High School class ring while cleaning a sewer near 7th and Illinois. The ring belonged to the late Raymond Anthony. his widow Sharon Daniels Anthony, of Bossier City, Louisiana, had attended the 1952 class reunion in Sidney and the salvaged ring will be mailed to her.

World blackout sparks calls for probes across New York

A Con Ed spokeswoman called the blackout an act of God while officials including the President and New York leaders demanded investigations into the lightning strike that knocked out power citywide for about a day. More than 3,400 arrests, billions in losses, and hundreds of fires marked the disruption.

Sidney Board Sets 4 Percent Budget Increase At 2.15 Million

The Sidney Board of Education will present a $2,148,679 budget at the next meeting and public hearing on August 2, a 4 percent rise over last year’s $2,057,914. The district may raise the mill levy by up to 147 mills, depending on state aid, from 63.63 to about 7.33 mills. The district hopes for $443,000 in state aid. $1,408,179 would come from local property taxes. The cash reserve fund decreased from about $600,000 to $200,000, and officials discussed reserve usage to control levies.
