County Tax Levy May Be Bit Smaller
Cheyenne County may see a smaller county budget and a lower levy next year as Clerk Ike Pindell completes the preliminary budget. He noted the budget could be around last year’s level, with a smaller base potentially reducing the levy if the valuation stays the same. No major new expenses are planned beyond possible salary increases and a courthouse building fund levy. Pindell reported good fund balances, including a $10,000 carryover in the general fund and a drop in the scientific re appraisal appropriation from $30,000 to $5,000. He will brief the commissioners at the next meeting on Tuesday.

Wallace White a 56 year old former Sidney shoe shiner was found dead in his southwest Sidney dwelling. Cheyenne County Attorney Pat Heaton Jr. said White hanged himself with an electric cord probably yesterday and the doors and windows were locked from inside. Verdict death by own action no inquest planned. Survived by daughter Mary Elizabeth White of DeWitt Mo with funeral arrangements pending Gehrig and Son Funeral Home in charge.

Fossil Seekers Report Rich Recoveries Near Sidney
University of Nebraska State Museum field party led by Bruce White and Carl Olson unearthed a half bushel of million year old fossils in the Uptegrove oil well pit northeast of Sidney. The cache included camel jaws, rhino bones, large fossil horse bones, tusks, and a saber tooth cat fragment. The find spurred museum help from Chadron and Crawford as digging may finish in a week with winter study planned at the university.

Beer Can Thrower Fined for Littering on Highway
H. H. Holcomb of Route 2 Broadwater was fined five dollars plus costs in Cheyenne County Court after pleading guilty to placing rubbish on a public highway. A Nebraska Safety Patrol report said Holcomb tossed a beer can from a car on Highway 19 near Gurley last week.

Truck Firm Fined $710 on 3 Counts
Ashby Drilling Co. faced a large Cheyenne County Court penalty after Judge C. W. Smith levied $710 and costs on three charges. The truck was overweight on tandem axles, over gross weight, and too long. Jaes Henderson of Sidney pleaded guilty as the truck and operator were halted by the Nebraska Safety Patrol on July 4 north of Potter.

Passenger Barbara Norton injured in bus side swipe crash
One passenger Barbara Norton 15 of Stewart Indiana was slightly injured when a Greyhound Bus east of Lodgepole Nebraska on Highway 30 sideswiped a modified bus used by custom cutters. Damage was estimated at 145 dollars by the Nebraska Safety Patrol.

Eugene Hamburger of Weatherford Oklahoma was treated for severe facial injuries after a one car crash on Highway 19 near Dalton. He rode as a passenger in a 1955 car driven by Glen Bennett of Sidney who swerved to avoid a combine. Bennett also received treatment and was released.

Native Nebraskans New Doctors Open Practice In Sidney
Two young physicians Dr C J Cornelius and Dr Robert Benner will open a medical practice Monday in the Grimm Clinic Sidney. Cornelius leaves Ogallala. Benner comes from Thermopolis Wyoming after a Navy and medical training career. Benner, a Scribner native, served in the Army Air Corps 1941-45 then studied at Nebraska and the University of Nebraska College of Medicine. Cornelius, a Kearney native, graduated from Creighton University School of Medicine 1951 and served in the Navy starting 1952. Both are married, Rotarians, and attend churches in their communities.

Funeral services for John Richard Muntz 67 operator of Dick's Barber Shop on 11th Ave Sidney will be held Saturday in Alliance. He was found dead Wednesday morning in his home behind the shop burial in Alliance. Survivors include two daughters and four grandchildren.
