Open Air Concerts To Start Saturday In Sidney

The Sidney Juvenile band will open the summer series of weekly open air concerts at the Sidney municipal band platform this Saturday night. Director B W Bonham announced the event at a chamber of commerce luncheon. The concerts, free and lasting two to three months, expect 1000 to 1500 attendees each week. The city plans a broader schedule with bands alternating weekly and support for uniforms and new outfits for the 60 band members.

Fire Destroys Battery Shop and Damages Three Homes

A major early Monday fire in Sidney destroyed the Don Ledford Battery Shop and caused near total loss of the adjacent Nolan Tire Service and Albaugh Tire Shop. The Bordwell home suffered serious damage as flames spread through the joined frame buildings. The battery shop stock and building were a total loss. Insurance covered most structures. Ledford faced about 3000 in uninsured losses. Bordwell carried no home or Nolan shop coverage. Albaugh had insured losses of 500. The fire began in the battery shop, discovered by Bordwell, and the department responded quickly.

State Golf Champ Gives Exhibition at Sidney Club

John Redick, Omaha’s two time state golf champion, teamed with Blip G. F. Doran for two nine hole rounds at Sidney Country Club. Redick and Doran opened with 33s, Redick posted 36 in second while Doran shot 42. Doran reportedly one of the region’s best, Redick praised his talent and Sidney course called the best natural in the state. Also notes Oren Maley’s post surgical recovery after appendix operation in Omaha.

Sidney Trade and Friends Making Day Planned

Sidney merchants announce Sidney's Trade and Friends Making Day to boost the town as a western Nebraska trading center. The July 16 sale begins monthly bargains with a 2 to 4 pm free movie, an open air band concert, and stores open until 9 pm for farmers, with each month featuring new rock bottom prices and a three member committee to prevent duplication.

Work On Burlington Depot Is Progressing

Construction of the 15000 Burlington depot in Sidney advances with favorable weather. Workers have laid the foundation for a 40 foot east extension to the waiting room, and the frame should be completed this week. The east wall will be removed to merge with the extension creating a 54 foot long room with a ladies rest room and a men's smoking room.

Sidney City Tax Reductions Projected This Year

City officials expect a large tax cut in Sidney this year. The school board cuts its estimate by 2000 dollars, the city council lowers its estimate by 4050 dollars, and overall assessed valuation drops 10 percent. Assessor Fred Stephens reduces value by 10 percent yet recoups losses via newly discovered personal property including several chattel mortgages.

Jail Delivery Nipped In The Bud In Cheyenne County

A jail break attempt by John Russell a Mexican was halted early Tuesday when he was caught sawing his way out of the Cheyenne County jail. Russell under sentence to the state reformatory at Lincoln for stealing a loaf of bread from the H C Gustin home at Bronson on June 12, twisted padlocks and sawed through a jail bar before Deputy Huff and Sheriff McDaniels intervened. He will be taken to the reformatory soon.

Harold Schroeder’s Son Undergoes Tonsil Operation

Harold, son of Mr and Mrs H Schroeder, was operated on in Denver for removal of his tonsils on Tuesday. He had been taken to Denver last week with a serious illness.

Brush Loses To Sidney Golfers In Return Match

Sidney golfers, leaders in the Colorado Nebraska association, defeated Brush 50 strokes on Sunday. Eleven Brush players traveled. Blip Doran and J Wagers were low with 80. Sidney will visit Scottsbluff next, while Akron comes to Sidney a week later. Dr Barger notes no Thayer cup cards yet and reminds golfers to read local golf bulletins.

Wheat Harvest Set to Begin Across County

Wheat harvest is near across the county with 1924 crop prospects favorable. Fewer hands may be needed due to reduced winter wheat acreage while wages are set at 2.50 a day. Spring wheat is just starting to head and all lines look promising with barley and oats short but healthy stands and corn progressing well.

Night Mail Plane Wrecked by Storm Near Chappell

Pilot Frank Yager of the eastbound night air mail between Cheyenne and North Platte force landed at Crippell due to a gale described as nearly tornado like. The ship was wrecked but Yager was unhurt except for bruises and a swift rescue followed as mail remained intact.

Sheriff McDaniel Clashes With Hoboes Near Sidney

Sheriff McDaniel and family stopped to avoid a hobo on the U P crossing near Lodge Pole. One hobo read a folder by headlight, was struck, and the group dispersed after the sheriff confronted them. Earlier, a gang allegedly tried to stop a car with two Sidney girls, who sped away. The sheriff vows no more trouble from the hoboes.
