Boeing Official Is Second 64 Victim on County Highways

George Nicholas Podkonyak 37, Boeing electronics supervisor on the Minuteman Missile program, died in a 1964 crash on Highway 30 ten miles west of Sidney. His wife and nine year old son were in the car behind. he was en route to Sedalia, Missouri, for a new post. The tragedy marked the NebraskPanhandle’s 13th death this year, 174 statewide.

Uncle Sam Calls For His Wheat

The Commodity Credit Corp has ordered elevators in Cheyenne and Kimball counties to decide between buying the government wheat at about 1.28 per bushel or shipping it to the terminal market. About a million bushels are involved, and several elevators have opted to buy rather than ship. Lightning Kills Cattle During Heavy Storm At Lodgepole Creek

A severe storm drenched the Lodgepole Creek valley with over an hour of rain late Wednesday night. Potter measured .61 inches, Sidney 1.57 inches, Lodgepole 1.25 inches, and Chappell 1.25 inches, with lighter totals elsewhere. A Cow herd at the Bill Behrends farm near Lodgepole was killed by lightning, while hail and flood damage affected wheat land, basements, and streets across Sidney, Potter, and surrounding towns.

Oil Wildcatting Warms Nebraska Drilling Activity

In Nebraska this week Wayne Petroleum Co and G W Strake drill the first of two wildcats in Richardson County while Ozark Corp starts one of four in Sioux County. Five new wells were reported in three counties with Kimball County expanding a new Owl Field as Chandler and Associates, Pan American Petroleum, and others push developments.

Tragic accident claims Cheyenne County man in 1964

The body of 37 year old George Podkonyak lies under a sheet after a one vehicle wreck on Highway 30 ten miles west of Sidney at 7 01 p m Wednesday. His wife Mrs Podkonyak and their nine year old son John discovered the scene shortly after the truck camper overturned, with Podkonyak thrown from the vehicle about 15 feet from the wreckage.
