Sidneyawaits 1970 Cheyenne County census results amid doubts about 1960 counts. Officials fear a county drop around 4,300 since 1960, with Sidney possibly down proportionally. Probes consider student and serviceman counting shifts, but most loss remains unexplained.
The Nebraska State Patrol logged seven accidents across Kimball Cheyenne and Deuel counties during the Fourth of July weekend. No fatalities. injuries ranged from minor to serious. Notable incidents included a one car rollover near Potter with $900 damage, a three car pileup in Potter causing about $1,000 damage to a station wagon and a total loss for another vehicle, and a two vehicle crash near Dalton with a Chevrolet totaling the car and injuring two passengers. A motorcyclist was severely injured east of Chappell and flown to an Omaha hospital. helmet not worn. Additional crashes occurred at the Oshkosh Interchange exit ramp and a weekend pickup camper rollover west of Chappell resulting in arm fractures and minor injuries to riders.
A Friday collision at the 12th and Illinois intersection involved Susan VanNatter of 804 Linden turning left and hitting Danny Bauer of 1535 Linden on a motorcycle. Bauer was treated for cuts and bruises at Memorial Hospital and released. Bauer was charged with failure to yield the right of way.
Funeral services for Margaret E Atkins 75 will be at 10 am Tuesday at Christ Episcopal Church. Burial in Kimball Cemetery. She died Saturday night after five weeks at Memorial Hospital. Survived by son Robert two grandsons sisters Mrs Herbert Linn of Kimball and Mrs Sidney Manning of Hyannis brother Robert of Boulder.
Mr and Mrs E J Lancaster of Tulare California praised Sidney campgrounds for travellers free to use at the fairgrounds. They lauded cleanliness space and policing made possible by the city Cheyenne County commissioners Chamber of Commerce Wheatbelt Public Power District and local clubs. Ed Cole C of C manager said similar letters arrive weekly.
Combines whir at Cheyenne County wheat this week if weather holds. Weekend cutting near Chappell, led by Farmers Elevator manager E. J. Ledbetter, with August Lutkehus and Dale Bruns fields yielding around 61 pounds per bushel, 12 to 14 percent moisture. Some hail damaged fields still show 25 to 30 bu/acre. overall outlook looks strong. Eastern county may begin midweek, including sandy areas north of Dalton and parts of the Peetz area.
Cheyenne County expects 700 students to enroll in college this fall as national data show record numbers and rising costs. Local families face a projected $1,799,000 burden for the coming year with tuition, fees, room, and board varying by public or private institutions.
The Nebraska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission voted to reduce its own revenue levy from two mills to one and a half mills effective July 1. Commissioner Paul Roberts noted the department takes in more than needed and this is not a public tax. The levy applies to oil and gas producers and is separate from the two percent severance tax directed to the permanent school fund. The three commissioners are Reed Gilmore, John D. Knapp, and Ray L. Smith, appointed by the governor.
Nebraska rural electrification expert William L. Peabody 37 returns home on a one month leave from a two year Afghanistan assignment. He aided Kandhar area recovery, with over 50 percent of the system restored and a new generator planned to restore full capacity. He will resume a one year post in Lashkar-Gar, training Afghans in system management and operations. The effort is part of an NRECA and USAID program to expand rural electric service in developing nations.
Cheyenne County producers receive the first batch of 2700 wheat and feed grain payments earlier than ever as part of a 1970 program. Ray Davis notes 90 percent of participants will be paid by July 15 and all by mid August pending certification. Payments support market balance, conservation, and farm income while avoiding large surpluses and benefiting both farmers and urban economies.
The Sidney Telegraph reports 1970-71 budgets for the City of Sidney and Sidney School District No 1 in today’s issue. County Clerk Ralph Englert notes Cheyenne County budget publication on July 24 with a public hearing July 29. Public hearings for city and school budgets are planned for Monday, July 13.

Sidney Volunteer Fire Department reports no fires in the Sidney area over the Fourth of July weekend, easing concerns after a quiet holiday period.
County Attorney Don Tedesco announced a crackdown on minibike operators in Sidney. He said anyone riding minibikes without a valid driver or vehicle license will face prosecution as police, sheriff's deputies and Nebraska Patrol were alerted. The action follows many late night complaints about unpermitted operation.
