Value Days sales run Tuesday and Wednesday in Sidney offering mid-summer bargains across many store merchandise. The event promotes Sidney as a top destination for retail values with a citywide push to visit participating stores during the two day period.
The Cheyenne County Soil and Water Conservation District earns praise from Agriculture Secretary Orville L. Freeman for updating its conservation program and modernizing the MOU with the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The district, organized August 28, 1946, outlines a nine page Program of Work detailing past deeds, current activity, and future plans including range conversion, windbreaks, and water management efforts across 719,700 irrigated acres, with 487 farmers cooperators and 322 basic farm plans already in place.
The body of Lawrence Hohlfeld a 52 year old Ogallala businessman was found on the north shore of Lake McConaughy about one mile west of Lemoyne early Sunday. Hohlfeld drowned after his boat capsized in the lake June 28.
Sergeant Mel Busekist head of the Nebraska Safety Patrol in Sidney said he was real proud of motorists during the long Fourth of July weekend. He noted extremely heavy traffic, the biggest rush Sunday night as visitors returned home, and that there were no serious accidents with arrests near usual levels. He praised that more than 99 percent of drivers acted properly on the highway.
June totals from the Nebraska Safety Patrol in Sidney show 1766 hours patrolling highways 22 hours on county roads 46 hours on vehicle checks 86.5 hours on radar checks 46.5 hours in court and 17.5 hours on safety education programs. Patrol drove 41305 miles assisted 117 motorists removed 74 obstacles issued 783 warning cards for moving violations 317 arrests plus 10 drunk driving arrests and 523 violation cards.
Charles Arthur Dalton 42 formerly of Sidney died Saturday at St Elizabeths Hospital Lincoln from a cerebral hemorrhage. He operated Dalton Clothing Co. in Sidney later moving to Lincoln with the family. Survived by widow Virginia Wade four sons and several siblings. Rosary tonight at 7:30 at Gehrig and Son Funeral Home. funeral Tuesday at St Patrick s Catholic Church Sidney.
The Sidney Council of Youth outlined a busy summer program including a Youth Employment Service housed by the Chamber of Commerce, bicycle safety school with police, a graduate survey, trail and historic marker signage improvements, a car wash and bake sale for July 18 supporting JFK Memorial Library, and weekly meetings through summer. The YES program targets 12 to 18 year olds for part time work. details to be announced.
The Sidney Civil Air Patrol aims to receive a Beech Aircraft T-34 from the Air Force for search and rescue, orientation, and cross country flights. A local flying club will operate it as The Sidney CAP Aero Club Inc, with a $10 membership and hourly fees. A meeting Tuesday at 8 PM near the Municipal Airport hangars invites all area pilots to decide on acceptance by July 10.
Democratic candidate William E. Colwell announced that a Colwell for Congress headquarters will open in Grand Island this August. He seeks the Third District seat and frames the move as expanding campaign operations.
An official reading of 101 degrees in Sidney on Sunday marked the year’s hottest day, with downtown readings at 106 and FAA station at 101 at 1 p.m. A brief shower cooled temps to 99. The heat is widespread across the Midwest, with 109 in southeastern Nebraska and little rainfall across the Panhandle.

The five day outlook from the Scottsbluff Weather Bureau calls for mainly fair skies with a few afternoon thundershowers. Highs are expected to reach 90 to 95 degrees with nightly lows around 60 to 65. Temperatures will average two to six degrees above seasonal normal with small daily changes.
A cooler Monday reduced heat across western Nebraska. In Sidney at noon the thermometer showed 87 degrees, about 20 degrees cooler than Sunday’s peak, with forecasts of scattered showers offering relief after a two week siege of heat.
Cutting of the new wheat crop starts along the southern Nebraska Panhandle. Sidney High summer band schedules a Tuesday 8 p.m. concert at the Jaycee Bandshell Legion Park, rescheduled after last Tuesday’s rainout. The program includes John N. Klohr Paris and Helena overture, The Sound of Music, Rhapsody for Band, The Thunderer, American Patrol, Rock-A-Bye Roll, and bands of Freedom.
E. H. Bud Reinmuth, formerly of Gurley, was appointed maintenance superintendent for Alliance Public Schools, taking over duties from Dewey Johnson. A Cheyenne County native, he has farmed near Dalton, run a business in Sidney and Gurley, and taught in Gurley schools from 1954 before moving to Alliance. He led the Gurley Fire Department for 14 years, served 20 years total, and chaired the Village Board for 11 years.
Two individuals faced charges in Police Court after weekend accidents on Sidney streets. Clarence Smith was charged with drunk driving following a Sunday collision on Tenth Avenue near Osage Street with Emmett B. Smith of Bridgeport. Vincent J. Phillips of Sidney was charged with reckless driving after a Friday crash on Newton Street involving Billie J. Blake.
Andrew Mack Englert, 75, longtime Sunol resident and stock buyer, died at his Ridgefield Connecticut home. He left Sunol in 1947. Funeral services are in Conn today July 6.
