No Accidents Here Over Fourth Holiday
In the southwestern Panhandle the Fourth of July brought no fatalities or highway accidents by Thursday noon. Nebraska Highway Safety Patrol Sheriff W. W. Schulz and Police Chief Sol Willis praised motorists for caution. The state traffic toll was low at one with the national total at 91. council predictions had warned of about 130 deaths.

Francis Hiner of the Nebraska State Employment Service in Sidney warns of a harvest labor shortage in a five county area this month and into early August. July will bring demand for several hundred non agricultural workers to handle tarnover s and related needs. In June 438 job openings were listed, 1,430 people contacted the Sidney office, 225 were women and 149 veterans, with 415 workers referred to jobs including 86 women and 45 agricultural referrals.

Sidney Baby Wins Region IGA Contest
Two year old Sidney boy Stephen Anderson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Anderson, won the regional IGA Baby Contest at Rudy's IGA Store in Sidney. He defeated over 600 entries to reach the national entrant stage and received a $25 savings bond. Bridge Replacement at Big Springs to Cost $26,387
The State Highway Department awarded Diamond Engineering Co of Grand Island the contract to replace the U.S. No. 138 bridge damaged by the May flood. The 148 foot concrete slab bridge will have a 24 foot wide floor, with Diamond handling construction and finished materials except steel. Separately Abel Construction of Lincoln won a project to armor coat Highway No. 26 between Bayard and Minatare for $11,917.50, using gravel and asphalt oil, with work starting between July 16 and September 17 and finishing by September 29. traffic will remain open during the job and preparatory repairs will be done by maintenance crews.

Two Injured as California Mother and Daughter Wreck
A mother and her daughter from California were injured Thursday afternoon on Highway 30 near Point of Rocks, 15 miles west of Sidney. Mrs Anna Christoff 57 and Mrs Rose Nicholoff 37 sustained cuts and bruises with Christoff under X ray for possible internal injuries. The 1948 Chevrolet driven by Theodore Christoff 64, following a Union Pacific truck driven by Norman Sorenson of Kimball, swerved into a borrow pit and rolled over once after braking to pass. The two children in the car were uninjured and damage was estimated at 450 dollars.
