State budget funds 100000 for High Plains station at Sioux Depot
The Legislature approved and Gov. Morrison signed a budget including 100000 for a High Plains agricultural experiment station at Sioux Army Depot. The plan: acquire land and buildings, select a site in the depot’s southeast corner, and begin negotiations with the Defense Department for custody and use of the property. The effort targets dryland grains like safflower and millets and is a joint plan by area development and the Nebraska College of Agriculture. A separate 50000 for the manpower retraining program at Sioux is also earmarked to meet federal matching requirements if needed. The station aims to stabilize the area economy as the depot closes in June 1967.

Wheat Growers Tell Of Farm Bill Appeal
Cheyenne County Wheat Growers Ron Maas and Ray Davis of Potter and Louis Miller of Gurley returned from Washington, D.C., where they spoke for HR 7097 to aid wheat growers. They said the bill would raise bread costs by about one cent per loaf and reduce treasury subsidies, while helping farmers and not penalizing the poor. Miller noted the new Wheat Users Committee aims to fight agricultural legislation, though urban Congressmen are wary of even a one cent bread rise.
