An explosion in the pump house at Shell Oil Co s Laison No 1 oil well seriously burned Jerry Cody 33 of The Flint Rig Co on his last day of work. Three other workers sustained minor burns. Cody was taken to Kimball County Memorial Hospital in fair condition.
The National Safety Council warns Ninety million Americans will travel during the July Fourth weekend with about 40 million passenger vehicles covering 5 billion miles. They urge a holiday safety drive to prevent traffic deaths, citing Memorial Day records and listing eight precautionary rules for motorists and passengers to follow.
The Fourth of July celebration in Dalton features a two o clock baseball game between Broadwater and Dalton in the afternoon. Picnic lunches are invited, with free ice cream lemon ade and coffee courtesy of the Dalton Lions Club. A band concert, a large fireworks display led by the Lions, and a dance sponsored by the Dalton American Legion Post will conclude the day.

TorontoPipeline Co. plans a 53 mile Sterling to Gurley line with 12 inch pipe and 70,000 barrels daily capacity, though steel shortages delay the $2,000,000 pipeline and await right of way and route confirmation through Logan County Colorado to Nebraska. The pump station north of Sterling costs about $100,000 and will include storage tanks and homes for crew. most Logan County oil is currently hauled by truck to Gurley.
City Manager Virgil Knowles announces a campaign to battle weeds with property owner cooperation. Residents should cut weeds and grasses and remove cat grass as a fire hazard. Sidney Volunteer Fire Department will burn weeds on vacant lots in a prevention effort. Knowles also reminds residents to trim low hanging branches near sidewalks to reduce hazards.
The T Men traffic program in Sidney, backed by the Junior Chamber of Commerce, reports 247 notices for illegal parking and 317 for speeding and related offenses since May. Chairman Delno Karr cites steady progress toward driver education and accident prevention, noting many drivers intend to do right but forget to consider others.

He was bound for district court. trial opens November term. Griffith silent, in jail since arrest in Hardin Colorado. Neighbor overheard a pre shot remark. no written confession. Deputy State Engineer L. N. Ress reports a highway department center line striping crew has begun a tour of major routes. They will stripe Highways 2 30 26 and 6 from Lincoln to Grand Island and between Gering Scottsbluff and along the Wyoming and Colorado lines. Motorists should slow observe flagmen and avoid crossing wet lines as the single aging striped machine handles center and passing lines.
Nebraska farm land values climbed five per cent in the four months ending March 1, per the Farm Real Estate Market of the U S Department of Agriculture. The national rise was two per cent, with Nebraska following the general Great Plains trend.
