Plans for sugar beet growth and irrigation in North Platte valley
North Platte Tribune reports an eastern capital group led by Standard Sugar Co president Leavitt plans to develop the North Platte valley, starting with purchasing the Farmers' ditch by February 1. The project aims to irrigate 750,000 acres across Scotts Bluff and Cheyenne counties with a canal system and reservoirs, plus later build a beet sugar factory and flouring mills in the valley, with colonization of lands and farmer financing. James J. Hill backs rail extension from North Platte to Bridgeport, tying into Burlington-Northern Pacific interests. The plan envisages a $2 million spend in three years, with potential $3 million more in five years, and positions North Platte as a future capital hub akin to the Nile valley.
