A blaze consumed a grocery store, photograph studio, printing office, meat market, restaurant, and two saloons in the business block. Estimated property loss runs to $22,000 as flames spread through the block, damaging multiple establishments and leaving crews to battle the fire.
A major fire in the town destroyed multiple buildings but heroic efforts by the Village and Union Pacific brigades and citizens prevented greater loss. McMullan, Girmann, McAleese, Yaegle, Dworak & Vath, and others faced intense heat as flames spread from the McMullan and Girmann sites to adjacent structures, with pumps and bucket brigades aiding protection of surrounding properties.
Fire swept a large portion of the business district causing extensive damage to Tobin Harper American Bank and Greenlee & Bensor stores. The McMullan property bore the heaviest loss with unsalvageable stock and uninsured fixtures. Several lodges and offices were ruined, while plans emerged for reorganization and reopening in nearby buildings.
The fireproof Sidney building stone protected the Callahan block’s east wall, saving the neighboring two story frame and the Telegraph’s east half of the second floor. The wall endured extreme heat with no real stone damage after cooling. The piece notes incorrect crediting of prairie dog extermination as road tax and calls it a misapplied law.
School notes report teachers and students in several rooms with absences and returns. Judge Grimes traveled from North Platte to hear Dr Yarlett Lodgepole's request for more time to pay a judgment under Slocum law. A dinner party at Mr and Mrs B A Jones celebrated their son’s marriage anniversary with a long, enjoyable evening.
Sidney Nebraska post office lists unclaimed letters dated January 22 1904. Names include Harry Brown Ralph Chaney and E McLernon postmaster notes press for letters advertise if called for.
Notice from H S Phillips of Sidney Nebraska dated January 14 1904 states he will not be responsible for any debts contracted by his daughter Daisy Phillips. The declaration appears in a family public notice.
All parties indebted to the undersigned must settle accounts on or before February 15 1904. C E Harper. Leave orders for periodicals at this office and save money.
