Nebraska park entrance fee backed by witnesses at hearing

A near unanimous hearing backing a Game and Parks Commission plan would charge entrance fees to state parks to fund facility upgrades. Vehicle permits would be 7.50 for Nebraskans and 12.50 for non residents annually, with 1.50 and 2 for daily passes respectively, charged per entering vehicle. The bill’s fate rests with the Constitutional Revision and Recreation Committee.

Senators clash over continuing state Telecommunications Committee

Senators Robert Clark of Sidney and Jack Mills of Big Springs clash over whether Nebraska’s Telecommunications Committee should continue. Clark backs LB 401 to give it statutory life citing rural phone service expertise. Mills and Sen Steve Fowler say the panel has outlived its usefulness. Carter plan under fire in Congress over jobs and tax cuts

President Carter faces liberal and Republican opposition in Congress to the 31.2 billion package. House liberals push near 30 billion in job spending while Republicans demand permanent tax cuts and higher business incentives. Senate leaders warn of shifts toward jobs, while White House and Labor Secretary Marshall spotlight a 13 billion public service jobs program for unemployed Vietnam veterans. Carter economist Schultze defends a quick stimulus with rebates and longer, targeted public works, public service jobs, and youth training. He notes housing programs belong in longer-term plans, not the temporary bill.

Corrections to Telegraph story on Baltes case and cow slaughter

The Telegraph corrects two errors from Wednesday’s front page. Victor Baltes of Kimball was convicted for aiding and abetting the sale of stolen goods, with the name Gene Bomar, now deceased, replacing Gene Bowman. The front page figure on cattle slaughter is corrected to each of the past two years, not between 10 and 11 million cows overall.

Jobs program for vets introduced

The Carter administration announced a plan to hire more than 200000 unemployed Vietnam veterans. About 50000 to 60000 would be hired by private industry, 145000 in public service, and 2500 in an outreach effort with a total cost around 13 billion dollars. The plan seeks corporate priority for veterans and includes 100 million to reimburse extra costs to employers.
