Crossings Safety Group Debates Rail Hazards and Plans

Cheyenne County Highway Traffic Safety Commission met in Sidney to discuss increasing railroad traffic and crossing hazards. A resolution urged the county planning commission to seek safety devices, with automatic gates and possible overpasses or underpasses at busy intersections, to be funded by railroads. Burlington Northern pledged flagmen at the 10th Street crossing and steps to reduce hazards were promised.

Sidney shopping center plan moves closer to reality

Developers Frank Richards and Carroll Rogers of Rco of Lawton Okla and TGY Corp representative George Hiersche visited Sidney to finalize a marketing survey for a southeast location. TGY, based in Oklahoma City with about 900 stores, may anchor the center. Parkland Development Corp backs the project locally. a favorable decision is hoped within two weeks and construction could start soon after.

Farmers urged to promote agriculture at Sidney meeting

Nebraskans pardoned bring Dix student home to Canada

Don Kugler, a 1964 Dix High School graduate now living in Port Medway Nova Scotia Canada, is among 37 Nebraskans whose draft evasion indictments were dismissed by the U S Justice Department under President Carter's pardon. Kugler, a Canadian citizen and former journalist, says he has no plans to return to the United States but welcomes travel and visits with friends and family. His pardon opens a possibility to visit Western Nebraska where he once lived, though he remains settled in Canada.

JCon plans farm implement yard west of Sunol in Cheyenne County

Public hearings are set by the Cheyenne County Planning Commission for J Con Inc to rezone 84 acres from agriculture to heavy industrial for a farm implement yard and salvage operation along Highway 30 about 2 1/2 miles west of Sunol. The firm aims to open in about a month and plant evergreen trees to screen the site. Also on the agenda Rural Electric Co of Pine Bluffs seeks a distribution substation about 12 miles north of Potter and a transmission substation four miles west and six miles south of Potter to support irrigation growth. The $4.1 million plan, financed by a Rural Electrification Administration loan, would begin late April or May and take about 14 months to finish, preventing voltage problems in the south Panhandle. A new planning commission chairman will be elected at the meeting.

Notices of drill filings on former Sioux Army Depot land

Four notices of intent to drill were filed with the Nebraska Oil and Gas Commission for sections 4 and 5 in township 14 north, range 50 west near the former Sioux Army Depot north of Sidney. Halliburton Oil Co. posted bids of 55.25 and 256.25 per acre, Exeter Drilling of Denver to perform the work, with tests in Pecos Field and Judi Field under the designations 1-4 2-Federal Worth and 1-5 2-5 Federal Brauer Drilling must begin within 45 days of contract approval to avoid losing leases and payments. Also reported a new discovery in southern Banner County near Potter and Dix by Devon Corp on Schubert land, with pipe set near Hunstman No. 1 Nelson after a stem test showing 2000 feet of oil, suggesting a new pay zone in the G sand.
