A carefully planned break in after 5 am at Town and Country Market in south Sidney yielded 2100 dollars, mostly cash. Police found sledge hammer, wrecking bars and tools left behind, with fingerprints unlikely. prior burglary in 1959 also noted.

Birds Rest Easy as Mild Nebraska Winter Persists

The region reports a mild Nebraska Panhandle winter with temperatures near 70 in January and subzero limits rarely reached. Robins and other summer birds linger unusually late, while ducks and geese have not departed far south, ice fishing challenges persist, and farmers worry little about immediate damage though wind and lack of snow protection remain concerns. Late snow and early spring rains are wished for to offset March and April thaw risks.

Adolph Sorge Dies Rites To Be Wednesday

Adolph Sorge 78 died Sunday at Memorial Hospital after a day earlier hospitalization. He lived in Memorial Rest Home three and a half years. Funeral at 2 p.m. Wednesday from Salem Lutheran Church Gurley. burial at St. Paul Lutheran cemetery west of Gurley. Born May 1 1885 in Deshler Neb to Fred and Elizabeth Sorge. He farmed near Gurley from 1918, retired 1948 to Sidney. Survived by three sisters-in-law Meta Sorge Sidney Katie Sorge Deshler Emma Sorge Lincoln Neb and several nephews and nieces.

Weather outlook shows generally fair conditions continuing into morrow. Warmer tonight and tomorrow with nightly lows near 15 to 25 degrees and daytime highs expected from 40 to 50 degrees.

Sidney sale sees 500 cattle bring strong prices

At the Sidney Livestock Sales Pavilion last Saturday 500 head sold with favorable market. Notable lots included 375 lb black steers at 29.75, 31 black steers averaging 398 lb at 29.15, 33 black steers 419 lb at 28.80, 35 heifers 371 lb at 25.10, and bred cows or heifers at 18.80 to 21.10. A special sale is slated for Saturday Feb 8 with over 1,000 head anticipated. manager Dave Truss urged growers and feeders to participate.

Blanche Hiett Dies at 80 After 54 Years in Area

Blanche Hiett, 80, died Saturday at Memorial Hospital after being moved from Memorial Rest Home. A Sidney resident 54 years, she was a charter member of First Christian Church. Survived by son Melvin, stepdaughter Mrs. Douglas Cruise, three grandchildren, two great grandchildren, sister Mrs. A. C. Warner, and a sister-in-law. Burial at Greenwood Cemetery after funeral Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Gehrig and Son Funeral Home. Rev. B. E. Ogden to officiate.

Denver oilman plans offset to No 1 Carl son well

Offset plans announced by Carl Houy of Denver for a north offset to his No 1 Carl son discovery well located north of Potter. The proposed No 2 Carlson well ( NW SE Sec 16 16 52 ) follows Houy's drilling permit application with the Nebraska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission. Details on timing and contractor were not disclosed.

A Lincoln Lincoln Omaha report quotes Col Dan Casey head of Nebraska Safety Patrol saying he will work to resolve any issues after a Legislative Council hearing on traffic safety. Sen Eugene Mahoney cited bad blood between patrol and some western sheriffs. local Sidney area checks found no misunderstanding. Casey says cooperation varies by region and he will attend an Omaha study committee meeting to explore the matter further.

Fenske Faces Cheyenne County Board Post Bid

A. A. Fenske of Sunol becomes the first candidate to file for Cheyenne County Commissioner from the first district. A native of Cheyenne County, he was appointed in December to complete the late Cecil Hunt’s unexpired term. Fenske has farmed in the Sund area, served as Sunol school secretary, and acted as Justice of the Peace during speeding crackdowns. He also served as county commissioner from 1933 to 1945 and later four terms in the Nebraska Legislature starting in 1952.

Daul Promoted In Road Dept

Robert L. Daul longtime Sidney based maintenance superintendent in the State Highway Department is promoted to equipment engineer at the Lincoln headquarters. He replaces J. M. McDonald who becomes division engineer at Ainsworth. The reshuffle also moves Tom Middleswart to new duties while remaining with the department. Daul succeeded J. W. Billeter who retired in March 1953. Daul’s Sidney shop successor has not yet been announced.

Dorwart Named to Nebraska Blue Shield Board

Dr. C. B. Dorwart of Sidney was named to the Nebraska Blue Shield board of directors at the annual meeting in Omaha on January 22. The report noted growth in Blue Shield membership during 1963 and that $4,734,737.02 was paid to physicians for services to Nebraska Blue Shield members during the year.

State Tax Chief to Review Cheyenne County Tax Exemptions

Lincoln AP report says Tax Commissioner Johnson will examine 31 Cheyenne County properties with exemption questions, mainly church parsonage type and some clubs and lodges, to determine if their dominant use supports tax relief. Preliminary checks will precede hearings if needed, with a gully case requiring a hearing.

135 Calves Weighed For Gain Contest

About 135 4-H calves were weighed at the Fairgrounds on Saturday to begin the Weight Gain contest ending at the Cheyenne County Fair. County Agent Ivan Liljegren says the total is about 35 below last year, due to beef prices, weather, and other livestock projects. He notes enrollment is not dropping. Helpers cited include Carl Kurz, Lloyd Brauer, Gary Anderson, and Jerry Flora.

Ticket Sales For Chamber Dinner Slow

Tickets for the Sidney Chamber of Commerce annual meeting remain available at the Chamber office.
