Major oil discovery reported near Gurley Nebraska
A Lieber No 1 well in Cheyenne County about three miles south of Gurley reportedly flowed 30 to 40 barrels of oil per hour. Midwest Oil Corp. drilled the tight hole, with rumors of commercial gas and oil in the area. This is the third Panhandle discovery since January and drilling in Nebraska remains slow with only three new permits issued that week.

Regent Scholar Winner Named From Lorenzo High School
Robert Hunter, a Lorenzo High School senior and son of Mr and Mrs Dean Hunter, is the fifth Regents Scholarship recipient from Cheyenne County. He carries a 94 average, plays in the band and chorus, and has lettered in basketball and track. Active in Boy Scouts and the Colorado Boy's State program, he was sponsored by the Peetz Lions Club and earned a one year scholarship, missing finalist in Merit Examinations by eight points.

Feed Grain Signup Opens February 10 in County

Potter Youths Injured When Auto Upsets
Two Potter High School youths were injured when a Studebaker driven by Richard Musil left the road after a front tire blew out on a county road two miles east and 2.8 miles north of Potter. The car rolled over in a ditch, Musil and passenger Jim Slama were hospitalized overnight with chest and stomach pains and a shoulder injury respectively, with the vehicle a total loss.

W A McMillen Dies at 97 Rites Set in January
William A. McMillen 97 died Thursday night at Memorial Rest Home after a long illness. A retired rancher, he lived 53 years in Cheyenne County and on his original ranch until moving to the rest home. Funeral Monday at 2 pm from First Methodist Church with burial in Greenwood Cemetery. Survivors: three sons Arthur Joe Stewart, one daughter Ethel Lyngholm, and 11 grandchildren plus 12 great grandchildren.

FBI Agents Will Conduct Crime Course

Guard Pays In Two Dollar Bills For Payroll
The Sidney Guardsmen were paid in two dollar bills Wednesday night as a novelty. The three month payroll totaled 3,839.31 with 2,333 handed out in two dollar bills. Capt. Jim Schaefer and Staff Sgt. Dan Rowan led the distribution, with some payments sent by mail. Last year the payroll reached 18,125.95. the battery has grown to 65 members and will rise in 1964.
