Cornhusker Caravan Brings Agricultural Exhibits to Sidney
The Cornhusker Caravan of 1953 visits Sidney on Thursday with eight extension specialists from the College of Agriculture in Lincoln. The six hour display runs 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at City Auditorium, featuring crops, grasses, livestock, home economics, 4-H, and Rural Youth exhibits. Visitors can ask questions directly, with a modern kitchen exhibit, storage-space features, livestock care details, cropping and irrigation insights, and 4-H youth information. Local organizers and Cheyenne County agents assist, and a free coffee and doughnut booth supports fundraising for a new extension department public address system.

Cheyenne County's first new oil well of 1953 promises to open a new field about five miles west of Sidney. Crude oil recovered from the D sand test at 4782 to 4797 feet, totaling 3300 feet oil with 180 feet oil cut mud and 120 feet mud water. Drilling continues to determine completion site while G and J sands are tested. A farm-out from Chi cago Oil Co. and Delaware Corp. drilled the location. the find could be the best yet in the county.

Cheyenne County growers Elmquist Potter and Miller Gurley earned second and third in the Nebraska State Milling and Baking Contest held during the Nebraska Crop Improvement Association meeting in North Platte. William Harris and Son won top honors with Nebred wheat, scoring 110.3 of 116 while Elmquist and Miller posted 99.2 and 96.7 points respectively.

Pioneer Buckingham Dies in Cheyenne at 76
Mrs Frances Buckingham a Sidney pioneer died January 15 after six weeks illness in Cheyenne Wyoming. Born February 13 1876 in Sidney she helped start local life and worked as a telegraph typesetter. She married Augustus Buckingham about 53 years ago in New London Connecticut and moved to Cheyenne where he worked as a Union Pacific conductor. Surviving nieces include Robert A Barlow and Mrs Ard Herrod of Sidney and Mrs F A Krause of Sioux City.
