Mayor Roche said no work on curb and gutter projects will begin until the WPA confirms participation in funding. City hopes to keep costs under 106 dollars per 66 foot lot, with labor and materials to be arranged under a WPA contract. Work could start in spring if agreement occurs, otherwise only minor tasks like tearing out old curbs may proceed.
The National Youth Administration allocates 134672 to help needy Nebraskan youths attend high schools and colleges as the second semester begins. Of this amount 53676 goes to high schools and 81000 to colleges, with about 5000 students expected to participate. Past half year figures show 3025 students in 573 high schools earned about 11900 dollars monthly, 1650 students in 23 colleges earned 18000 dollars monthly, and 18 graduate students in 2 colleges earned 15.24 dollars monthly. Applicants must be 16 to 24 and demonstrate need, character, and ability. Work projects are planned by school officials.
St Patrick s academy cagers aim to start a new victory string against Goodview in LPVAA action. The Pats , after dropping from the unbeaten class last week, cancelled a game with Broadwater due to a storm and seek to schedule Saturday night at Broadwater.
Alliance hosts the No. 66 district music contest April 21 and 22 deciding to drop the massed festival events. A concert on April 22 at the high school athletic field will feature invited visiting bands. Four judges will be chosen for vocal and instrumental events, with classes A through D. The move follows a Sunday meeting of 26 music supervisors, superintendents and principals from 17 high schools.
79 year old Banner county judge Mr Shafto boasts a near nightly closing time and a lifelong commitment to marriage. Since 1907 he has presided over the county for 29 years with 404 wedding permits issued last year and he personally married 390 of them.
Twenty farmers enrolled in the farm electricity class opened in the LO ag department of the high school. Meetings set for Thursdays and Fridays at 7 30 p m for eight weeks with special sessions to follow. Topics cover farm electricity, laws, and generation. Wind driven plants and wind chargers are upcoming topics.
The Wyobraska Area Council, Boy Scouts of America executive board reported that at least eight in ten boys of scout age want to join. It urged public awareness and strong adult leadership to meet growing demand across eleven Panhandle Nebraska counties and parts of Wyoming. The 1939 goal is at least one troop in every town of 500 population or more, with an adequate financial plan to support expansion.
A coroner's jury in Alliance freed two young motorists and found no criminal negligence in a fatal early Sunday crash north of Alliance. Dorothy Eaton, 17, Alliance waitress and mother of a six month old child, died. Passengers Nick Haller, 23, Alliance, and Donald Gasseling, 20, Hemingford, were injured. Haller admitted whiskey use.
Carl Kurz of Sidney was among fifteen 4-H club members who received free calves at the Denver stock show Tuesday night. Thirty youths vied in a scramble to claim calves, with the rule that recipients must fatten their calf and return it to next year's show. Calves were donated by local supporters of 4-H club work.
J H Campbell chairs the ACP committee as Cheyenne County holds educational meetings on the 1939 federal farm program. Farmers will review rules and their farm allotments mailed to them, then sign a non binding request to enable inspection and potential eligibility for agricultural conservation payments.
Sewell Wingfield, chief PWA project engineer for Nebraska, completed a two day tour of the Kingsley dam site and found the project progressing. He noted the Union Pacific right of way relocation below Keystone to Lewellen covers 33 miles and required penetrating cactus infected sandhills and Ogallala deposits. Bridges a 500 foot span and siphons under steep canyons posed major challenges at several points.
Western Nebraska roads opened slowly after the first major storm of 1939. Four snow plows operated in Cheyenne County as drifts closed side routes and wind piled new snow. Six inches fell at Sidney, five at Chappell, with widespread blizzards reported in Rapid City, Casper, and surrounding towns. No serious accidents. several roads blocked. Buffalo County planned dynamiting a Platte River ice gorge near Odessa to protect low lands.
Sidney Maroons dropped a 33 27 decision at Chappell in a tense conference setback that narrows title hopes. They trailed 20 9 at halftime, rallied late, and now face Scottsbluff at home seeking anti rev enge and a season score tied.
Charles H. Spriggs and Charles F McGraw, aged 39 and 60, were each sentenced to three years in the penitentiary after pleading guilty to burglary charges before District Judge J. L. Tewell. Arrest linked to a series of carpenter tool robberies from Lexington to Morrill. bonds set at 1000 dollars.
Forty five memberships including honorary ones had been secured by the chamber of commerce up to yesterday. This is about half the number the membership committee hopes to gain before the drive ends in the next two weeks. Institutions and individuals remain uncontacted as members are out of town or busy with business. More solicitations are expected today. The membership list from last year is used to contact members about meetings. New members are added. old ones who won’t join are removed. The next meeting is Monday noon February 6. The membership thermometer is being prepared and will be placed in Greenlees window for several weeks.
Sidney high school basketball players were trapped in Chappell by a blizzard. Townspeople opened homes and provided meals and sleeping quarters. Officials and fans praised the gesture, strengthening ongoing athletic ties between Sidney and Chappell.
The annual birthday ball at the city auditorium netted 144.65, reported by W LeRoy Larson and Ernest Worden. Half stays for local charitable use, half goes to the Warm Springs foundation in Georgia to aid Infantile Paralysis prevention and cure. Both organizers praised public response and called it a supportive gesture.
Mrs Marjorie Merle Ross 31 of Yuma Colorado died in hospital Tuesday after a brief pneumonia illness. She was the daughter of Mr and Mrs A M Sherman of Yuma former Sidney residents born Maxwell Iowa August 27 1907. She lived in Sidney around age 13 then Sterling where she graduated from Sterling High School. Surviving: daughter Shirley Jean parents a brother Russell Sherman New York City sister Harriott Sherman Sterling. Funeral 11 a m Thursday at A D Jackson Son mortuary Sterling conducted by Rev E Ray Cameron. Body to be brought to Sidney for burial Saturday.
Aldrich and Blackburn form a Sidney dealer for Allis Chalmers farm implements and Diamond T trucks. Ray Aldrich of Grand Island and Everett Blackburn of Hastings establish the company. Blackburn arrives to plan building redecorating at 10th Avenue and Newton Street. Aldrich to join soon. Opening day and machinery show planned. Ray Patterson to head parts department.
Winter storm blankets the panhandle and midwest with 7 inch snowfall. High winds create low visibility and massive drifts. Snowplows worked through Tuesday night into Wednesday, clearing major roads as motorists remained stranded in ditches until late Thursday.
The First Infantry Rifle team of Fort Warren captured first place by three points in the Sidney Mid-winter Rifle Championships. Bridgeport took second, Sterling Colorado third. Team scores: First Infantry 1375, Bridgeport 1372, Sterling 1359, Harrisburg 1349, Douglas 1313. Individual honors went to Bridgeport’s L. J. Koenig and C. Larsen with 283 totals. Larsen was narrowly ahead on tiebreaker after a 186 standing in twenty shots. Forty-five marksmen from three states competed in the first open rifle meet on an enclosed range.
