Governor Sees Guard Call-Up in Nebraska
Governor Val Peterson told the County Assessors Association that every National Guard company in Nebraska could be called into service within five months. He voiced no advance information on units but urged rapid civilian defense preparation and asked the legislature to create a state civilian defense authority, a state guard, and a $100000 appropriation. March of Dimes Marches On With Calf Auction Boost
Cheyenne County March of Dimes events raised funds totaling $350 at the Sidney Livestock Sales Pavilion auction where a donated calf pitched by Emerald Rapp sold repeatedly ending with Harvey Miles obtaining the final bid. County chair W. Martinosky thanked Rapp for the donation and venue. A hat pass during intermission at a professional basketball game, led by Beta Sigma Phi, complemented the drive. Another benefit, a pinochle party at the District 97 schoolhouse, net nine dollars from six tables, with top prizes to Jim Deaver and Mrs. Brank Morey and consolation prizes to Bob Irwin and Mrs. Erich Brauer.

Cheyenne County Sheriff W. Schutz said the woman killed October 20 near Arriba Colorado has been identified as Mrs Esther Kopp, formerly of Ordville. Her husband William Hopp was employed at the Sioux Ordnance Depot before his death in 1944. The case remains unsolved.

The Ohio Oil Co announces a new wildcat drilling location one mile north of Sidney at its North Sidney structure.
