Alliance City Accepts 15000 Offer for USO Building
The City of Alliance accepted the governments offer of 15000 for the USO building its furniture and equipment and awarded notice of acceptance to C W Anderson of the Federal Works Agency at Kansas City. The city will obtain a bill of sale and termination of the lease and pay 15000 to take title. Kimbelli Kimball county politics opened the 1946 campaign with Warren A Fisher filing as a Republican for sheriff and R 41 Tatum also declaring as deputy sheriff. A fire destroyed the Wm Decker farm home northwest of Bridgeport after an oil stove explosion.

W H Webber transfers to Sunol starting January seventh, with W D Phillips of Haxtun filling in temporarily at the station due to housing shortages in Chappell. The Webber family will move from Chappell after the first of the month.

Charlotte Worley of Alliance Nebraska a major rancher on 3800 acres died in Rochester Minnesota at 74. A University of Nebraska graduate she owned wheat corn alfalfa hogs and potatoes and was once among western Nebraska's wealthiest citizens. Debt and drought hit her fortune after 1934 1936 leading to mortgage refinancing efforts in Washington. She met with Mrs Franklin D Roosevelt during a visit.

Hit By Carryall Boy Escapes Injury at Sidney Intersection
Eight year old Jimmy Hansen escaped serious harm after being struck by a U S Army carryall at Sidney main intersection Saturday afternoon. Deputy Arnold Braasch reported the truck turning at slow speed as Jimmy crossed with the light. The tire struck his leg causing a sprained ankle and abrasions. no bones were broken according to Dr B H Grimm. He was treated and allowed to attend the Fox Theatre serial finale.

U P Layoff Affects 13 More This Week
The Union Pacific ordered layoffs for thirteen more car department employees effective yesterday. POW Movement To Homeland Is Started
All German prisoners of war held at Scottsbluff and its Douglas branch camp will depart for Europe by Wednesday. About 5,000 POWs are in the Scottsbluff area with 2,000 more at Greeley and Trinidad and at Algona Iowa. Evacuations aim for about 750 prisoners daily through January 23, with shipments routed to the west coast for transport to Europe via the Panama Canal to avoid delays for returning U.S. servicemen.

The Soil Conservation Service has opened a pictorial display in the S A Foster Lumber Co window in Lodgepole. It illustrates soil and water conservation work and the benefit of sub surface tillage and leaving crop residues. Experiments show residue retention boosts rain absorption up to 300 percent on some soils and reduces runoff similarly. With residues, average annual precipitation becomes about three times more valuable.
