Epstein named to fill school board seat after Cook resignation

Jerry Epstein, fourth in November race, was chosen by the board in a unanimous decision after a lengthy executive session to fill the vacancy left by Bob Cook. Epstein, manager of EpRo Manufacturing, was praised for voting strength and sustained interest in the position. He will be sworn in at the February 8 meeting.

Women plan flight to protest Iowa beef strike

Over 30 women from the Sidney area will board a plane at Sidney Airport Thursday morning bound for Sioux City Iowa to join a rally against the Iowa Beef Processors strike set to begin Saturday night Organizers are Phyllis Baird and Pat Von Seggern about 17 women from the southern Panhandle and roughly that many from the North Platte Valley will make the one day trip A plane from Aspen Colorado is secured for the cross state flight Eddie Collins a Red Oak Iowa farm market commentator organized the Sioux City rally to stress a contract settlement between the Amalgamated Meat Cutters and Butcher Workmen Union

Potter youth finalist in state Voice of Democracy contest

Extension board sets annual meet in Sidney

The Cheyenne County Extension Board will hold its annual meeting Monday January 24 at 1 30 p m in the basement of the courthouse in Sidney Plans for the coming year will be made and a new director from the Northeast District to replace Leo Wolff of Gurley will be elected.

WNTC Heads Toward Record Spring Enrollment

Preliminary figures from Western Nebraska Technical College show an estimated total of 427 students this semester, with 270 full-time. Congresswoman Virginia Smith to speak in Sidney

Final plans set for Congresswoman Virginia Smith to address a Sidney meeting hosted by Women Involved in Farm Economics on Saturday at the Cheyenne County 4-H Building at 1 30 p m open to the public with several hundred expected. The group also signed a petition protesting a four percent railroad freight rate hike calling it arbitrary and urging ICC action.

Trails est National Historical Park proposed from Ash Hollow to Fort Laramie

Congresswoman Virginia Smith reintroduces a bill to create a Trails est National Historical Park spanning Nebras ska Ash Hollow and Scotts Bluff area to Wyoming Fort Laramie. The plan would preserve sites including Ash Hollow Mud Springs Courthouse and Jail Rocks Chimney Rock and Scotts Bluff. Feasibility studies proceed with hearings sought this year. Nebraska revenue data projects 650000 extra visitors annually and about 2 million dollars more in revenue.

New probation officer hired for Sidney area

A Sidney man and former Coast Guard chief warrant officer Chuck Mahaffey was named District 10 Probation Officer for Cheyenne and Devel Counties, replacing Darrell Johnson. He began duties Monday at 930 10th Ave, after a long Coast Guard career and training, and will provide counseling and guidance to referred individuals.
