North Divide Prairie Fire Devastates Sidney Area

A massive prairie fire started near Marlow Station northwest of Lodgepole, swept east and south across Cheyenne county, destroying barns, hay, feed and livestock. Losses run into thousands as residents fight the blaze and officials urge mandatory long fire-guards to protect homes.

Re Appraising School Lands in Cheyenne County

Commissioners Robert Emanuelson W C Dugger and J B Hurnton began re appraising all Cheyenne county school lands. The 172 sections will require six weeks to two months of steady work traveling from Lodgepole to Sidney and along the state line. This is the first valuation since 1888 and values rise from twenty five cents per acre under the new appraisement. L B Schilling of Chicago Heights IL visited Sidney this week after buying land northeast of Sidney and considering moving to Cheyenne county.

County Treasurer Reports Bright Cheyenne County Finances

Cheyenne County Treasurer Greenlee presents a semi annual report showing total collections of 39 395 28 in taxes with 21 500 00 deposited in county banks at 3 percent interest. Funds on hand include 15 585 40 for districts 3 578 55 bridge 4 356 62 road and 3 245 90 bond. No warrants or unpaid claims. Levying year 1965 yielded surplus funds enabling possible tax cuts.

Joint Installation at Odd Fellows Hall

The Odd Fellows and Rebecca lodges held a joint installation Monday evening with District Deputy Grand Master T B Dawson and Alice Stubt presiding. New officers include Sam Sweet Noble Grand and Grace Hart Noble Grand for the Rebecca lodge, followed by a banquet of oysters and other fare, ending near midnight.

Mrs McLernon Hosts Honor for Mrs Blanchard at Social Tea

Mrs McLernon entertained Saturday afternoon in honor of Mrs G F Blanchard who is visiting her daughter Mrs Stewitts after twelve years away. The event recalled Sidney and Fort Sidney social life, with Progressive High Five across five tables. Prizes went to Mrs Miles first, Mrs Blanchard second, and Mrs Fishman consolation as guests praised the menu and declared the evening a lovely time.

Teachers' Association Holds Highly Successful School Meet

A large Saturday gathering at the school house featured vocal solos by Miss Renu Credit and Mrs. Belle Morris, papers by Miss Hiett on Primary Language and Miss Whitehead on The Value of Discipline, plus a Ward method demonstration and a rousing talk by J. L. McIntosh replacement Wun. Ritchie Jr. The event closed with Annie Stuht’s ballad and an open reception with a school display praised by Principal W. R. Pate and staff.

Sidrey Fire Brigade Elects Officers And Plans Ball

The Sidrey Fire Brigade held its annual meeting at the engine house last Friday. Elected were Leslie Neubauer president M O Sager vice president Frank Tobin treasurer W S Doran secretary A K Greenle recommended as chief by the village board. A masquerade ball will be at the Tobin opera house February 14 tickets £1.00 adults 25c and 10c for children with Indies free. Funds from the ball to buy needed fire apparatus. Burlington Ore Train Wreck Triggers Colorado Delays

An ore train on the Burlington line derailed near Wilton Colorado due to a defective wheel last Saturday night. Seventeen cars plus the engine were wrecked but no crew were harmed as wrecking trains from Alliance and Sterling cleared the line by Monday. mail and passengers were rerouted during the clean up.
