County board meets January 9 1906 to name deputy assessors set annual expenses approve bonds and transfer funds. They approve American Bank as county depository and authorize premiums for treasurer bond. Claims listed for general fund approvals include suppliers witnesses jurors and road work with detailed amounts and transfers to adjust district charges.

Quiet county shifts leave coroner and surveyor posts vacant

The Telegraph notes two overlooked offices changed hands last week. Chas M Wright steps down as county coroner with Dr W F Bassett of the Sidney Drug Co succeeding him. Bassett has served as coroner before and is praised for readiness. Robt S Willis is reappointed county surveyor and will continue line running and corner locating for two years.

Miss DeLyle Howard Heads Home After Fire

Miss DeLyle Howard daughter of Mr and Mrs C Howard of Lodgepole precinct suffered severe burns while saving belongings from a boarding house fire in Oregon. She left Oregon for a warmer climate in Brawley California after smoke and heat injured her lungs and plans to return to Cheyenne County with her brother's body when able.

An exhibit of department work in Sidney Public Schools will be shown Saturday January 13 at 8 PM. Work from each pupil will be on display and all patrons are invited to inspect the exhibits.

Railroads face tax suits in federal court ruling

Attorney General Norris Brown pressed for a decision in railroad tax suits in federal court with Omaha not yet informing. Burlington and Union Pacific seek to avoid substantial tax payments while arguing that higher valuations and lower levies under the 1908 revenue law would reduce their taxes compared with 1903, amid questions of uniform taxation and prior county filings.

Burglary at Essig Hardware Boxed by Quick Theft

Burglars broke into C. D. Essig hardware store last Friday night by removing a glass pane and prying loose rear window bars. About one hundred dollars in goods stolen including three Gem safety razors three gun metal watches two nickel watches one Colt revolver 82 calibre one Colt New Police revolver 32 calibre four cheap blued revolvers 32 and 38 calibre and knives with Essig name on blades. No trace found but occupants said to be tramps who left quickly. A liberal reward is offered.

Johnson Leiner Wedding Near Sidney

Johnson Leiner reports a pretty home wedding at the Leiner ranch ten miles north of Sidney last Wednesday at 1 p m. Miss Gesvin Leiner and Mr William Johnson were married by Rev J S Leamer of Sidney with a ring ceremony. Guests, only relatives, enjoyed a dignified dinner and the couple will begin housekeeping at a ranch ten miles northeast of Sidney.

Pleasant Lodge Installs Sidney No 196 Officers

A large audience filled the A. O. U. W. Temple on Thursday for the installation of Sidney Lodge No 196 A. O. U. W. officers. Frank Ackerman served as Grand Master Workman with P. M. W. Oberfelder and other grand officers assisting. The ceremony impressed attendees, followed by a banquet and addresses, as the lodge begins 1908 with strong hopes for growth.

McIntyre Escapes Lincoln Penitentiary Inmate At Large

Lincoln publication reports Chas McIntyre, a life convict and one of the murderers of Frank Wiser, escaped Thursday night through a clever ruse by a cell mate. Guards were misled for about twelve hours during counts, with McIntyre said to have climbed the wall after a dining room count, aided by a water pipe. Tracks were found, and authorities launched a citywide search as Sullivan and another man also sentenced for the same murder. The Telegraph notes a subscription run and extends best wishes for 1906.
