Gilmore executes after last minute stay lifted

In Salt Lake City, prison officials confirmed the Fourth Judicial District carried out Gary Gilmore’s death sentence at about 8:05 a.m. MST, following a stay lift by the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Denver. Earlier, a U.S. District Court stay was denied, and a Denver three‑judge panel lifted the stay minutes before the scheduled execution. The Nebraska Hospital Association Rate Review Committee approved a roughly 7.5 percent across the board cost increase for Sidney Memorial Hospital, raising semiprivate room charges from 9 to 900. Sidney Public Library Offers Wide Range of Materials and Services

The Sidney Public Library highlights extensive offerings from books and magazines to films, art prints and sculptures. It partners with the Nebraska Library Commission to order missing titles and provides microfilm access to local newspapers. The library loans 900 adult records, 635 juvenile records, 470 cassettes, 78 eight tracks, art prints and sculptures, plus projectors and bookmobile outreach across Cheyenne County.

Oil office moves to Sidney amid brisk southern Panhandle drilling

The Nebraska Oil and Gas Commission relocates its Sidney offices from the Marathon Building to 1135 Jackson after space loss to Western Technical College. Drilling permits issued include six new holes in Cheyenne County with activity east of Huntsman and near Sidney airport. One rig nears Potter and another southeast of Dix into Colorado. Officials note a lean period but expect year-end reports by mid February. December showed six developments in Cheyenne and Kimball Counties. Wulf Oil Co filed five well notices north of Chadron in Dawes County, with no driller named yet, as plans for extensive Chadron Crawford oil exploration continue.
