Salt block proves merit in five year dairy study at Cornell
The animal husbandry department at Cornell University reports a five year test supervised by Dr S E Smith showing cows consume about one ounce of salt daily from a hard salt block, sufficient to meet supplemental needs. The study finds cows use more salt when loose, up to four times daily, indicating luxury consumption and that sodium is the key need. Cows deficient show cravings within weeks, with symptoms easing within 24 hours of adequate salt, and milk production and health rebound accordingly.

Corn Silage Replaces Hay in Dairy Ration
Corn silage can replace some hay in dairy cow rations at a rate of three pounds of silage per pound of hay. Cows should receive at least one pound of hay and three pounds of silage per 100 pounds of live weight. Because silage has less protein, add 14–16 percent protein grain mix, adjusted for roughage quality and cow production.
