Mead elected president of Consumers Public Power District

Earl I. Mead of Scottsbluff was elected president for 1955 at the Consumers Public Power District annual meeting. Officers named include Mark T. Moore of Kearney as first vice president, G. L Cooper of Humboldt as second vice president, Guy Stinson of Norfolk as secretary, and C. C. Sheldon of Columbus reappointed treasurer. Mead previously served as president in 1940 and 1954.

Kimball County Oil Adds One New Producer in Area

Kimball County records its 236th oil producer as Sin clair Oil reports a drill stem test from Joska No 1 in Chaney Field yields 3 420 feet of oil in one hour. A Cheyenne County wildcat was plugged and abandoned while several rigs move on new wells in Kimball and Deuel counties. New stations in Ogallala and Osghkosh plan operation and a large Scottsbluff building year caps 1954 construction.

John Deere Day Set Wednesday at Sidney Implement

Hollywood movies and a generous lunch mark John Deere Day at Sidney Implement Inc on Wednesday. Store managers Bob Kalthoff and Gene Jimmerson schedule two full length hits and educational farming films with lunch starting at 11:30 and showings at 1 p.m. at the Fox Theatre for ticket holders. An error in Friday’s Telegraph misdated the event as December 12. Kallhoff and Jimmerson expect a strong turnout after about 1500 attended the store opening last winter.

Country Club Stockholders to Hold Annual Meeting

Country Club stockholders will convene at the club house Wednesday at 8 p.m. for their annual meeting. Secretary Ed Swanson issued the notice last week and election of new officers is on the agenda. M. L Lefty Merritt has served as president the past year.

Wickards Gift Nativity Scene to Sidney Chamber

Ernest and Mrs Wickard of Lodgepole donate their elaborate Nativity Scene equipment to the Sidney Chamber of Commerce. The display will remain free to visitors and donations will go to the March of Dimes. The scene, started six years ago, has drawn thousands yearly and will be set up again this Christmas in Sidney.

Olive Hicks Buried Sunday

Funeral services were held for Olive Hicks at the Potter Lutheran Church with Rev. O D Hoagland officiating. Arrangements were by Craig Mortuary. Burial followed in Potter Cemetery. Hicks, 77, died Jan 5 after a long illness, having lived in Cheyenne County since 1907 and later in Potter. Survivors include two sons, a daughter, three sisters, and numerous grandchildren.

Rancher Dies At Son's Home In Gurley

Perry Howe, 78, a retired Cherry County rancher, died of a heart attack at his son Perry Jr's home in Gurley. Born December 20, 1877 in Maysville Indiana, he married Fannie Benson in 1919 at Broken Bow. Surviving are two daughters Kathleen Sparks Nebraska and Helen Valentine, son Richard Valentine, and a brother James. Funeral services and burial will be in Valentine. Youth Arrest Case Reveals Alias William Brown

In Cheyenne County a raid last Monday led to two youths in custody. One used the name William Brown, but FBI records identify him as Curtis Schoolcraft, a WV prison escapee. West Virginia authorities requested a hold order while officers confirm the youth’s real identity amid an outstanding FBI stolen car charge.

Driver Cited On 3rd Time Intoxication

Dale Anderson 46 of SOD pled not guilty in Cheyenne County Court to third offense drunken driving. Arrested Saturday by Sidney police, he requested a preliminary hearing set for Saturday morning. Anderson had convictions in March and April 1953 for drunken driving. bond set at $300. Also Judge Smith fined Earl Miller 49 of Chappell $100 and costs, suspended driving rights six months after guilty plea. Miller was arrested by Nebraska Safety Patrol after a Lodgepole collision where his pickup sideswiped a parked Molle truck. damage about $100.

Miller Named Delegate By Leaseholders

Alvin Miller was chosen to represent the Cheyenne County Leaseholders Organization in Lincoln when the Legislature discusses school lands leases. At a Saturday meeting of 28 leaseholders Allen Karnick andbin Olson were named alternates. The group proposed protections for land improvements, limits on annual rent increases, and Western representation on the State Board of Educational Lands and Funds.

Safeway Files New Sidney Store Plan With Officials

Safeway, Inc filed with the City of Sidney a complete store plan as construction nears. City reviews will verify code compliance before bids. The project, costing 150000 to 200000 dollars, shows a 125 by 100 foot building with parking on three sides on West Illinois Street between 19th and 20th Avenues. Opening is tentatively scheduled for late fall.

James Olney Grigg 40 Killed in U S 30 Crash Near Sidney

James Olney Grigg of Sidney, foreman at Rogers Truck Lines, died instantly when his car rammed a stalled semi on US 30 three miles east of Sidney. He was 40, married, father of one, and had lived in Sidney for three years. Funeral services set for 2 p.m. at Gehrig & Son Mortuary chapel with Rev. Albert Albel officiating.

New Trial Requested In Thompson Divorce

A contested divorce suit dismissed earlier by District Judge I J Nisley for insufficient evidence returned to court this morning. Mrs Lela Thompson of Dalton sought a new trial against Fred Thompson, arguing the judge's decision contradicted the evidence and law and that an error of law occurred during the trial.

Good Deed Backfires Police Brutality Allegation In Court

Sidney police court Saturday fined Clarence Heath 16 and F. C. Asher 28 for disturbing the peace after a New Year’s Day incident in front of the police station. Officer Bauer testified he struck Asher while restraining Heath. Asher said Bauer attacked him unprovoked. Attorney P. J. Heaton Jr. said he would appeal to district court asserting brutality and a jury trial. The trio had been returning from Broadwater with Heath’s grandmother when stopped on West Illinois Street.

New Machinery Repair Shop Opens by Larson Co

Larson Machinery Co announces a new machinery repair and service shop at 1125 Grant St just north of the Union Pacific tracks. Cliff Larson says the shop will handle all makes of tractors and implements and will be staffed by Massey Harris trained mechanics. The facility will overhaul air cooled engines and stock parts for Wisconsin, Clinton, Onan and Briggs & Stratton engines serving farmers in a wide radius.
