Sidney voters must file candidate petitions for two city council seats by February 5 with a $10 fee. Nominations come from the February 28 caucus. if more than four council nominees appear, a March 6 primary will trim the field to four. Two council and two school board seats open.
Cheyenne County shows fewer divorces in 1955 with 26 versus 50 in 1954 while marriage licenses held steady around 120. Criminal complaints reached 1,034 with $18,636.40 in fines, driven mainly by speeding charges. October led fine totals at $2,418.95. Fine money funds school districts.
Partly cloudy and colder tonight with a low around 10 to 20 degrees. High tomorrow expected near 40 degrees.
The Lions club and American Legion Auxiliary will host a March of Dimes benefit dinner with 300 tickets planned. The event will replace the usual business district solicitation and include the local Lions talent show. A melodrama was dropped from plans.
The Internal Revenue Bureau will not modify agent availability in Sidney. John Freaking remains the sole agent, with the JTRS office open Mondays and one extra week in February and April. He emphasizes self help for form completion while offering limited personal assistance to residents.
Cheyenne County Sheriff Bill Schulz reported that thieves tried to break into the International Harvester store east of Sidney early yesterday. A wave of glass was broken but the door remained closed and nothing of value was taken.
Northwestern Bell disclosed Sidney added 439 telephones in 1955, bringing the Sidney exchange total to 4,228 and Ordville to 181. The company will print 7,500 directories this year, up 1,000 from 1955, with a April issue.
Union Pacific to start work on a 13th Ave trestle within days marking the first phase of Sidney’s underpass project. The trestle closes 13th Ave, leaving Tenth Ave as the sole north south crossing unless a temporary route is added. City officials seek a crossing but railroad says none planned. A recent freight train blocked both crossings, delaying a fire response.
Nebraskans including C. H. Manny Kreader and Herb Hughes urged the USDA to back a domestic parity two price plan for wheat during a Washington meeting with Ezra Taft Benson. A voluntary soil bank program was also recommended to aid small farmers facing market squeeze.
Bridgeport district of the Nebraska State Department of Roads and Irrigation opens a permanent Sidney office to supervise road construction. Seven men relocate including project engineer Shaw Little to oversee near area work and underpass projects.
Ohio Oil Co returns String No. 6 from Wyoming to Sidney area boosting local drilling to two rigs. String No. 5 drills Humphrey No. 1 Morrill County while String No. 6 works George Fleming B No. 1 southwest of Sidney. Manager Robert McMillen says both rigs will mostly drill in Cheyenne County and plans to start with two.
Farmers in Red Willow Hitchcock and Franklin counties plan permanent county units to join the Nebraska Wheat Growers, now with over 2000 members. If formed they will be the farthest east in the association, which has 13 counties so far. The group is funded by a one fourth cent per bushel wheat levy for research and disease resistant wheat strains.
Grace Kelly, noted actress, will marry Prince Rainier III of Monaco after Easter. The announcement yesterday set Hollywood and European royalty abuzz with plans for a high profile royal wedding featuring a top star paired with Monaco royalty.
Joe Crumrine longtime Sidney electrical plumbing heating and gas line inspector is retiring to St Petersburg Florida with his wife. Appointed February 24 1947 he personally inspected every new building and about 80 percent of old ones. He credited good public cooperation and thanked the city officials. Richard Land of Bridgeport will be Sidney new inspector.
Lynn Martin Jr. joins Farmers Insurance Group in Sidney as local agent after four years in the U S Air Force. He is formerly of Haigler Nebraska and is married with a daughter. Gor man D Hawkins will be resident claims adjustor, coming from Denver and with two children.
Sidney Federal Savings and Loan Assn reports first mortgage loans exceed 1.3 million in its annual financial statement, with total statements over 1.4 million. The association will hold its annual meeting Wednesday January 18 at 7:30 p.m., per call from President Leon Fine and Secretary Marius Christensen.
Under sponsorship of the Sidney Lions Club a Twelfth Night service will be held tonight at 6 45 at the band shell. A program features lighting of the trees the Christmas story reading and carol singing directed by Jack Knicely. Sidneyites urged to attend to close the Christmas season.
Wilfred R. Nelson of Potter rises to the second member seat on the Nebraska ASC State Committee. Parl Young of Weepingwater leaves as chairman and Frank Reece, formerly second member, becomes chairman. New board member Honor M. Oschner of Madison, a corn farmer and former county agent.
Five accidents since Wednesday report over $3,150 in damage in Cheyenne County. Cecil Johnson of Ft. Morgan and Herman Herzberg Jr of Oroville Calif collided on Highway 30 near Sioux Ordnance Depot, injuring passengers Keith Dickman and James Nixon. Herzberg faces charges. Dickman remains hospitalized in satisfactory condition. LaReta Banta, 16, of Sidney rolled a 1951 car southwest of Lorenzo, nearly totaling the vehicle. Sidney court fined Robert Schaaf, 19, for careless driving after rear ending a stopped car driven by Larry Black, 17, with about 24 feet of skid marks and $1,000 damage on King Street near Sidney High School. Donald Rich of Colchester, Conn., lost a trailer in a ditch when his 1950 car pulled onto Highway 30. Ray Parshall charged with failure to yield. John Thomas, 19, faces a sneeping charge after sideswiping an auto transport. damages total about $300. Clyde Phillips of Mansfield, Missouri, drove a truck that contributed to the crash east of Sidney.
Two men were sent out Wednesday night in the January induction call. Laurence Hansen of Potter and Nelo Dunquez of Sidney were sent from Cheyenne County to Denver for examinations and assignment.
