Don Born, a state highway patrolman, stopped a 20 year old prisoner Don E Brown from slitting wrists with a razor at Cheyenne County jail Tuesday night. Brown, jailed on forgery, had escaped with Lawrence Hollon earlier and was recaptured after surrendering in Alliance. Deputy Braasch credited Born for interrupting the self harm act and aiding a sedative restrained return to custody.

Funeral services for Ira L. Schaeffer 70 will be held Saturday at the Alliance Methodist Church. Rev. Harold B. Taylor of Sidney and Rev. Mr. Lee of Alliance will officiate. burial in Alliance Cemetery. Born April 6, 1881, at Walnut City Town he married Ina Gedney in 1906 and homesteaded near Hyannis, Nebraska, before moving to Alliance in 1943. Surviving are three daughters and one son, with a former daughter deceased in 1939.

Three men Roland Davis Earl Gillespie and Elver Tucker were captured by Sidney sheriffs and sent to Sterling authorities on theft inquiries. Investigations link them to a Big Springs liquor store burglary Dec 24 and other thefts in Chappell Crook and nearby locations. About one third of the liquor was recovered.

Half of Fuel Clause Cut From Light Bill
Sidney residents will see a one mill reduction on their next electric statements as half of the two mill fuel cost charge is removed due to natural gas use. The city plans to remove the remaining mill once gas conversion is complete. The fuel clause arose from rising diesel costs, originally five cents per gallon, now about 8.5 cents, with dual fuel engines that can switch to diesel if gas fails.

Former Lodgepole School Superintendent Dies at 78
Albert H. Kuhlman, 78, former Lodgepole schools superintendent, died this week at the Masonic Home in Plattsmouth after eight years as a resident there. Masonic services are set for 2 p.m. at the Lodgepole Methodist Church with burial in Lodgepole Cemetery under The Craig Mortuary. Born February 4, 1873, in Ponca Nebraska, he led Lodgepole schools for years until about 1922. His wife Mrs. Kuhlman died in Lodgepole during that period and is buried there.

Mountain States Drilling Co resumed work on the Reese well five miles south and two west of Chappell in Deuel County after a weather shutdown. The hole reached 2,680 feet when drilling stopped last Saturday night and was resumed on Wednesday. The Niobrara formation had been reached prior to the pause.
