Nebraska Statehood Runaround Between Johnson and Congress
Nebraska was admitted as a state after a protracted clash between President Andrew Johnson and congressional Republicans led by Thaddeus Stevens. A 1866 constitutional draft and a 1867 vetoed, then repassed, statehood act culminated in Johnson declaring Nebraska a state on March 1, 1867, amid impeachment efforts that fell short by one vote.

300-Lb Calves Top At 31.00 At Sidney Sale
Sales at the Sidney Livestock Sales Pavilion last Saturday featured 300-lb calves topping at 31.00 with good prices across cattle. Whiteface steers 797-lb sold to eastern Nebraska for 24.00, black heifers 705-lb to the same buyer for 23.00, and 705-lb whiteface heifers brought 22.95 from a Colorado feeder.

John Owens Dies At 78
John Owens 78 died Friday evening at Memorial Hospital. Services will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. from First Baptist Church with Gerald Brestel and Dan Allen officiating. Burial in Greenwood Cemetery. Born January 14, 1889 in Laredo Missouri to Milford and Elma Conliss Owens. Survived by wife Minnie, one son Horace and two granddaughters Linda and Nancy, all of Sidney. Burial by Craig Holechek Funeral Home.

Weather outlook from Frontier Airlines notes fair and warmer conditions tonight and Thursday with a low near 20 and a high in the 50s to 60s and only a five percent precipitation chance. The five day outlook expects temperatures 4-10 degrees above normal through Saturday, warming early then colder with possible snow toward the end. Highs near 50 and lows 15-25.

John Jensens To Enroll At Nebraska Uni
John Jensen and his wife plan to enroll at the University of Nebraska next fall for advanced degrees. Mrs Jensen aims for a master’s after completing a B.A. He holds a B.A. and M.A. and will pursue a Ph. D. The couple sold their Parkview Drive home to Joel Birner and will rent temporarily on Monterey Drive. Jensen began in Sidney teaching social studies and later led South Ward elementary as its first principal.

Farm Bureau Leader George Heumann Dies at 54
George Heumann president of the Cheyenne County Farm Bureau died at his farm home near Browns Sunday night at age 54. Funeral services are set for Wednesday at two in the First Methodist Church with Rev. John Stayton officiating. Interment will be Greenwood Cemetery. Heumann, born July 1, 1912 in Chicago, married Dorothy Wilke in Omaha in 1934. He moved to Cheyenne County in 1956 and headed statewide Farm Bureau work. He served as secretary of the District 75 school board and is survived by his wife two sons a father three grandchildren a brother and a sister.

Four pregnant doe antelope were killed in a region west of Peetz. One carcass was found at the scene, three later euthanized. Charles Geller, lifelong Dalton Broadwater resident and 1945 Dalton High School graduate, has been named Centennial Deputy Marshal by the Dalton Lions Club. He will serve with Centennial Marshal W. W. Schulz of Sidney and deputies from Cheyenne County communities. Geller and his wife Jeanette have four children. he is active in the Lions Club and Presbyterian Church and has led the Dalton Cub Scout Pack.

Robert Hime, 40, of Cozad, collapsed on the basketball floor in Ogallala during a game against Sidney. The veteran official, with nine years of high school sports officiating in western Nebraska, died Friday night just before halftime.
