Walter Hampton asks Chadron city council to place a 200000 bond issue on the spring ballot for a Dawes county war memorial. The plan includes a swimming pool and recreation building and a council decision after an engineer visit on February 28 to explain the project.
The western district of the Nebraska Dental Society plans a spring meeting in Alliance on March 24 and 25. Registration is at the Drake hotel, with group sessions at local dental offices. The main convention session follows Sunday at the Drake, with a dinner dance that evening at the Alliance Country Club. Dr. Myers of Omaha Dr. Carman of Denver and Dr. Albrecht of Lincoln will present clinical demonstrations and lectures on both days.
A. F. Heyde sold his Lincoln hotel holdings to Eppley Hotels Co of Omaha. Executives A. H. Jenkins and H. E. Visick were in Scottsbluff to finalize the deal. Planned improvements include top-floor ballroom conversion to guest rooms with built in tubs and showers and a private bath in every room.
Bushnell Ray Poelma 34 of Pine Bluffs was electrocuted while repairing a Dolan farm line. He removed a glove to fetch a tool, flinched from a shock, and touched a high tension main line. Survived by wife, parents, and several siblings.
Scottsbluff reports improved prospects for sugar beet labor after Nebraska Beet Growers Association directors meeting. A Sugar Division official says Washington will cooperate and ensure enough workers, while Senator O Mahoney notes wage scales will be released this week. President C M Kearney urges immediate work on a new government sugar law before December expiry.
About 100 farmers and soil technicians heard that Alliance-Deep well pumps do not affect water levels. Geological surveys show water at 90 to 130 feet. The Pope Jones act loan approval boosts interest in deep well irrigation in the area.
Two prairie fires last week burned about two hundred acres near Sidney. A blaze just south of Buckaroo Park damaged fairways at Sidney Country Club and threatened Woods and Foster farms. On Saturday a hay meadow near Charles Kavanaugh place six miles east of town was scorched as wind drove flames and hampered control.
Elizabeth Walters Tobin 67 died after months of declining health in Sidney nephews Harold and Gordon Tobin survive along with three sisters and two brothers born in England she and husband Frank Tobin moved to Rock Springs Wyoming in 1882 and Sidney two days after their 1898 wedding service at Christ Episcopal Church set for two this afternoon with interment in Greenwood Cemetery.

Hazel Cronk plans converting vacated Lockwood Jewelry space into a bus depot linked to Hazel's Cafe. The depot will open by month start with a waiting room news stand and outside entrance on Illinois street and a connecting door to the cafe. It will stock souvenirs and novelties.
Alfred Edwards of Middlesbrough England will speak at the Rotary Club public institute at eight this Thursday evening at the Methodist church. Edwards is a British Labour MP since 1935, managing director of Harrison Brothers Ltd., journalist and author, with extensive lecture tours in the UK and US.
Weyerts American Legion Post from Gurley Dalton area plans a fund drive for a new Legion building north of the Dalton Cooperative Society on J. C. Frandsen land. Backing comes from Lions Club firemen and local leaders. plans emphasize wholesome youth entertainment and open public use under Legion control. Subscriptions from locals welcomed, not sought from World War II veterans.
Harold Spiker reported his car stolen Saturday evening from 954 6th Avenue and found Sunday morning in a vacant lot behind Hand Dairy Store. The vehicle showed no damage and a license plate from Francis Hiner was later found on Spiker’s car. A boy recovered the plate and turned it in.
Co. C. Holtorf, 72, superintendent of the Alliance and Sterling divisions of the Chicago Burlington and Quincy railroad, died Friday in Rochester Minnesota. He made his headquarters at Alliance and had served the Burlington for 49 years since May 1945. Previously he lived in Sterling and had many friends in Sidney.
Beckmann Motor Co at 1212 Illinois St. showcases a new 1946 Oldsmobile with Hydra Matic, as dealer Beckmann highlights over decades of General Motors sales. The shop offers repair, Gates tires, U.S. and Denman tires, and plans to carry related lines like Pakaway units and boats. a continuing 1946 series profiles local businessmen in Sidney.
Dr Louis H Kaub longtime Nebraska Methodist leader will retire June 1 as Park Hill Methodist pastor Denver due to ill health. He trained at Baker University and Boston University and studied in Europe Egypt and Asia Minor before ministry in Nebraska. He and his wife reside at 2374 Elmt Street with daughter Mrs Roland Schlueter in Manila serving as army chaplain family links noted.
Funeral services were conducted Saturday afternoon at The Craig Home for Funerals for Mrs. Lawrence Hodgkinson, 70. The Rev. Walter Jewett of the Methodist church presided. Interment followed in Sidney Greenwood cemetery. She died suddenly last Thursday morning of a heart attack, survived by her husband and one son in Detroit.
Sunol's scrappy Mustangs, Lodgepole Valley Conference champions, head to the district Class D tournament at Sidney High School. Sunol faces Sundl Dix in the opener, Gurley meets Broadwater, and Lodgepole battles Dalton. Lewellen meets the Sundl Dix winner, with semifinals Thursday and a final set for nine o'clock. Season tickets $1.25, students 75 cents. finals 60 cents. St Patrick's Sidney plays Kimball in Class C at Mitchell starting Wednesday.
The first unit of the state-wide two-way radio system began operation last Wednesday, announced by Capt. C. J. Sanders. Housed in the state capitol, the system spans about 100 miles with 37 cars equipped now and all 59 expected to be outfitted by week’s end, enabling rapid statewide coverage in emergencies.
Officials from city, county, and state urge motor vehicle owners to display both license plates and inspect vehicle lighting. Failure to comply could lead to arrest. many currently in use have faulty lighting, endangering the operator and public.
Funeral services were held at St. Patrick's Church for Edward Buettner, 38, who died last Wednesday in North Platte. He had lived in Sidney until about ten years ago. Burial followed in the Catholic cemetery with pallbearers Cecil Hunt, H. E. Beckmann, Ross Bales, A. J. Hemmer, W. N. Hemmer, and Jack Baker. The Gehrig Funeral Home assisted.
Dr C H Babbitt a Minatare native and University of Nebraska graduate joins Dr B H Grimm in town to start practice today. He and his wife and 2½ year old son reside at the Couch Hotel. He served as a flight surgeon with the U S Coast Guard, saw Okinawa combat, later attended Pensacola, and was stationed at St Petersburg before discharge last week.
City council approves a new steam heating rate schedule effective Friday night lowering charges from the October 1945 increase. The plan raises rates 30 percent over pre October 10, 1945 levels but eases the earlier surge. Downtown users gain most, with all customers benefiting. Minimum bill set at 2.60 monthly per service. Restoration of 10 percent discount for bills paid by the tenth.
Col A B Rapp told The Telegraph that persons planning to list machinery and farm equipment for his annual sale should do so by Friday March 1. The sale is set for Tuesday March 12 and listings already received indicate it will be one of the largest held. Listings can be left at The Telegraph if contact with Col Rapp fails.
Arthur C. Borcher Nebraska's wheat seed producing champion will receive his award March 8 in Omaha at a Omaha chamber of commerce meeting. He will receive the annual honors offered by the Nebraska grain improvement and Nebraska crop improvement associations for producing the state's best winter wheat sample last year.
The 36 thousand dollar damage suit of Mrs Evelyn Ross against E P Uptegrove was taken from the jury and dismissed by Judge J L Tewell after more than two days of testimony. The case drew a large crowd during the district court session.
W J Robinson a West Airborne lieutenant recounts the Bastogne siege during a Father and Son banquet with over two hundred attendees. He led 48 men to eight remaining, was wounded, and then relieved by Patton. The talk urged efforts to prevent another world war as Cub Scouts and older boys were recognized.
The Zwickl family marks 17 years in Sidney with a Friday start to a March 1 through March 7 anniversary sale. The store at 1744 Illinois Street will give away twenty five dollars worth of groceries at the sale’s end as a token of thanks for patronage. Details available at the store.
The Sidney Livestock Commission Company will hold a community machinery sale this Thursday February 28 starting at eleven o clock at the sales pavilion on West Linden Street. E W Eberle and Elmer Kath are in charge. W C Sheets will hold a public auction at his home in Potter on Wednesday March 6 selling farm machinery livestock household goods and other articles. The sale starts at 1230 Col A B Rapp is to be auctioneer and The Potter State Bank of Potter clerk. The sale advertisement will appear in The Telegraph Friday.

Farmers warn of incalculable losses where conservation work is lacking, while weather officials debate the extent of an upcoming storm.
