Chamber aims for 800 members in 1959 blitz drive
The Chamber of Commerce pushes to reach 800 members in 1959 as 22 two man teams worked yesterday aiming to finish the drive quickly. Chairman Dean Wilson said many prospects were out of town and will be called again. Last year about 195 members, with a goal of at least 200 for 1959, and a budget plan of about 913,000 was outlined while seeking a new executive manager.

Druggist Carl Wieland Dies at 51 in Chappell
Carl J. Wieland 51 a longtime Chappell druggist died Sunday night at Chappell hospital after a heart attack in January and recent leg amputation. He moved from Sutton to Chappell 21 years ago and worked at The Winter Drug Co in Sidney before settling here. Active in Rotary and community affairs, he Funeral services were today at Chappell Methodist Church with burial at Sutton Thursday. Survived by wife Agnes and son Bill, a University of Nebraska student.

City Manager Murrey Fuller to resign and depart
Murrey Fuller will end his service as Sidney city manager with a resignation effective February 26. he and his family depart Thursday evening for Richland Washington, where he becomes first city manager on March 2. Fuller led the local Air Fair campaign and major airport improvements. Richland is about 23,000 in eastern Washington known as The Atomic City due to Hanford Atomic Works.

Ranchers Told Hopper Infestations May Hit Spring
Federal entomologist Jerry Bell warned Cheyenne County ranchers that grasshopper populations could reach severe proportions this spring near Brownson unless preventive spraying is taken. A four man rancher committee will gauge interest and arrange a range spraying program funded by federal and state partners, with a minimum 10 000 acre area and 10 percent cropland allowed if full spraying costs are paid.

Potter Youth Wins Oratorical Contest at Gurley High
In the District 1V Legion Oratorical contest at Gurley High School Gym on Tuesday evening Potter High School senior Jim West won first place and a medal, with a $25 savings bond to follow in Nebraska finals. Patsy Davis of St Patrick’s Sidney took second and Gurley sophomore Ron Kriesel finished third. other finalists included Peggy Schwartz Minatare Trea Surrat Morrill Milan Van Newkirk Oshkosh and Maryland Bills Lodgepole. Judges were John Peetz Joel Babcock and J.L. Thorpe. Lawrence R. Hilty Sr. was district contest chairman.

Gordon Printz 16 son of Mr and Mrs Victor Printz of Sioux Ordnance Depot has been chosen as Sidney’s 1959 Boys State candidate. A three letter man in football wrestling and track he is junior class governor and active in high school. Born in Sturgis SD he attended Brownson Ordville Sidney Junior High and is now a junior at Senior High. He lists science mathematics and English as interests and may pursue coaching. About 300 juniors from Nebraska attend Boys State sessions sponsored by the American Legion with local Rotary Club backing Sidney’s candidate.

Sidney City Council Friday approved annexation of a 1.01 acre tract owned by Robert H. Gunderson where a bowling alley is under construction. FAA Survey Team Inspects Sidney Airport
A Federal Aviation Administration survey team and Frontier Airlines inspection group spent 38 minutes in Sidney on a trial run. Eight officials split into four and four, noting facilities for reports. Chadron voters in pleasant weather approved a $30,000 airport improvement bond on Tuesday after a prior rejection last fall. The measure received 903 votes for and 761 against, with a simple majority required for passage.

Some 456 Cheyenne County motorists obtained their 1959 motor vehicle registrations on Tuesday an all time high for a single day according to County Treasurer M M Inhelder. The courthouse was closed Monday for Washingtons birthday and will close at 4 p m Friday while still open at noon. About 1000 residents about one eighth still had not obtained tags and registrations by Wednesday. The rush expected to be near Tuesdays record.
