D J Roach vice president of the Great Western Sugar Co Denver told editors bankers and business men at Scottsbluff that mechanizing beet growing and cutting labor costs is essential to restore the crop’s dominance in irrigated regions He noted land fertility input and livestock feeding as keys to yields War years reduced soil fertility and future gains rely on fertilizer diverse feeding and better farming He cited 1941 no harvester in field 1946 2150 harvesters and 150000 acres harvested in the U S with 519 machines in his company’s territory He projected 60000 to 70000 acres to be harvested by machinery in 1947 and highlighted seed segmentation reducing thinning labor by 25 percent with longer seed saving further hours He cautioned that spring work gains hinge on farming practices not just machines.

Mrs. Petteys Pioneer Dies in Lodgepole
Nellie Petteys aged 86 a Cheyenne County pioneer who settled at Lodgepole in 1887 died after a ten day hospital stay. Born Sept 23 1860 in Lyons New York she and husband Bell Petteys homesteaded north of Lodgepole. Funeral services were held at Lodgepole Methodist Church with interment in Lodgepole cemetery. The widow who spent most of sixty west years in Cheyenne County was a sister of Bert Bates and lived between Lodgepole and Sidney in recent years. She was remembered as a quiet pioneer devoted to family.
