Federal offense reported by Oshkosh post office staff after month of thefts from rural and town mail boxes. Authorities urge parents to teach children to avoid tampering raising flags and handling mail. touching mail by unauthorized persons could lead to prosecutions.
Kimball County school reorganization committee will study merging Kimball elementary districts into a single unit with the high school district. A University of Nebraska survey found Kimball grade and rural schools inadequate, recommending high school facilities be used as a junior high and plans drafted to redistrict. Two committees were appointed to assess economic and administrative educational effects.
Scottsbluff Sen Terry Carpenter said he will not seek reelection to the unicameral in 1959. He added his statement does not mean he will run for any other office, though he has hinted at a possible 1960 gubernatorial bid. He noted past talk of a governor run depended on tax proposal outcomes and legislature actions. The early sessions saw much opposition to Carpenter’s moves.
The Alliance Council urged Senator Gerdes to approve LB 273 which would alter gas tax splits by boosting city per capita shares from 15 to 25 cents and Hemingford from 10 to 20 cents, with counties potentially losing funds and facing higher property taxes if enacted. The Box Butte County Board opposed the measure, warning county road funds are in the red.
Rep. Donald McGinley of Nebraska reports deep disagreement between Ezra Benson and the House Agriculture Committee on wheat policy. Denver advertising executive Bill Chenoweth who gained national attention from his Russian speech at the Sidney Nebraska Jaycee Convention opens the first in a planned series of TV variety and informal conversation shows. TV listings describe him as humorous and erudite and the one hour program will air Saturday evenings. He plans to feature local talent and invite visiting celebrities for appearances.
James L. Schimka 58 lifelong Cheyenne County resident died Saturday at Veteran's Hospital Cheyenne after 17 months as a patient. He worked as a mechanic at Miller Implement Co Sidney. Services Wednesday at 10 30 a.m. Gehrig and Son Funeral Home Rev Henry Monnich officiating. Burial Greenwood Cemetery with military rites. Survived by wife Twila and three daughters Linda Lou Jacqualyn Lee Dorothy Jean all at home, one brother Joe Sunol, four sisters Emma Sunol Mary Brown Elia Fraass Rose Gould.
George Edwards Valentine, 22, of Washington Courthouse Ohio, called the Sidney Safety Patrol claiming parole violation for leaving Ohio without notifying authorities. Paroled December 3 1958 after a four year term for armed robbery. He turned himself in at Cheyenne County Jail on vagrancy charges.
The 1959 Nebraska Legislature considers a conservation bill after a long public hearing with little opposition. A special committee studied production methods to preserve reserves, while LB8 died in committee and LB81 would push drilling on state school lands.
Funeral services for Mrs. Bessie L. Wright aged 64 were held this afternoon at the Craig Mortuary with Rev. C E Brittain officiating. She died Friday night at Memorial Hospital after a ten month illness. Final rites will be held tomorrow at Livingston Mortuary Grand Island and burial in Grand Island Cemetery. She was born November 9 1894 at Archer Nebraska to Ordo and Amelia Sanderman Reynolds. She married A E Wright in Grand Island October 12 1957. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church Grand Island Royal Neighbors Degree of Honor Luceba Chapter Order of Eastern Star Chappell. Survivors include her husband one son Doyle Niemann of Grand Island two stepchildren Mrs Lyle Carlson Cheyenne and Richard Wright Sterling Colorado a sister Mrs Vern Smith Clarks Nebraska and two grandsons.
Mrs. Frank Balderson of Sidney won a 1959 Mercury Station Wagon and many prizes in a Lever Brothers Soap Contest. She tied for first in the Lux Division of a Price Is Right style contest by guessing prize values and submitting the slogan Live in Liquid Luxury.
The Postoffice Department invites sealed bids to transport air mail between Sidney post office and the local airport. Four round trips daily over Route 0238, about 3.8 miles one way, will be required. Bids due 4:30 p.m. Feb 26 at Wichita office. no bond. drivers must be 18 or older.

Cheyenne County discusses SB 679 proposing a minimum salary for all county officials set at 4900 per year. Current top salary is 3800 while the County Attorney earns 2400, exactly half the proposed minimum. Officials doubt the measure will pass.
Memorial Hospital board plans a 2 p.m. bid opening Friday in the city auditorium basement for a rest home addition. Targeted budget is about 300 900 with Hill Burton funds. Architects report 11 sets of general plans and four electrical sets submitted to bidders. The project aims for a brick and ranch style facility to blend with the hospital and is expected to be quickly filled.
Nebraska officials report about 250000 nonfarm workers, across roughly 11000 employers, would be eligible for unemployment benefits if jobless through no fault of their own as of February 1 under state and federal insurance laws. Last year 32000 unemployed drew benefits, while 57009 jobs were filled by local offices. Coverage includes 215000 private sector workers, 17000 federal employees, and 17000 railroad workers. about 54000 government staff, 19000 charitable/nonprofit workers, and 34000 small-employer workers are not covered.
