Announcements received in Sidney report the marriage last Saturday of William B. Jordan, formerly of Sidney, to Margaret Kathryn Nelson of Denver. The wedding occurred in Denver and the couple will reside in Colorado Springs after February 15. Jordan is the son of Mrs. Lucy Jordan and the late W. W. Jordan, grandson of pioneer B. A. Jones, and has lived away from Sidney for years. He works in insurance and has spent the past two years in Colorado Springs. Friends here said they had not been informed of the planned marriage.
Paul Chaney, 34, of Falls City files for attorney general on the Democratic ticket to succeed William H. Wright who said he would not run again. Chaney has been an assistant attorney general since 1933 under Wright and Good, and holds a Creighton University law degree earned in 1925 after studying at the University of Nebraska.
A demonstration of new features in John Deere power farming machinery will be at the John Deere Plow Company building in Sidney on Monday February 17 starting at 10 30 a m A free lunch will be served at noon and free awards will be given in the afternoon Farmers and others interested in modern power machinery are invited to attend says L T Poole manager of the company
The S. and K. Stores company was granted a beer and pool hall license by the city council in special session Tuesday evening. The beer license allows on sale and off sale permits. The firm plans to open soon on Illinois Street in the former Sidney Beer Garden location. Applications were signed by Doyle Sizemore and M. M. Kennedy.
Leon Fine was elected president of the Sidney country club at the annual stockholders meeting held Monday evening in the club house. He had served last year as vice president and joined the club at its organization. E A Winter was chosen vice president and J W Johnson reassigned as secretary treasurer. Directors named were Guy V Doran L T Poole and D R Thomas with Thomas a new member. Mrs A S Hardy named president of the ladies auxiliary. The meeting was led by retiring president E L Uptegrove. Secretary Johnson reported club indebtedness had fallen despite slower than expected membership growth.
The United States treasury branch office proposed for the Alliance WPA district will not be placed there. District officials learned this week that the plan to set up a treasury office in each WPA district and pay workers directly has been abandoned. A state WPA finance officer discussed payroll handling with district staff and devised a more efficient method.
The Lions Club was entertained Tuesday noon by the junior orchestra under direction of J W Cochran. The group presented a diversified program showing progress this year. Members viewed a portion of the March of Time news reel at the Fox Theatre, with manager Carl Smith inviting the club to see growth of the Town sending club nationwide.
Townsend Club reports 164 members paid with many more promising to join at the regular Tuesday night session. Secretary James Hazelwood noted a mix of young and old members and announced plans for a large open meeting on February 25 featuring an out of town speaker plus a social program.
Epworth league members from at least 11 northern Colorado and western Nebraska towns plan to attend the west end Epworth league institute in Sidney February 21 and 22. Rev. J. J. Nebraska farmers may see about 10 percent higher demand for farm products in 1936 according to an extension service survey. The report ties the rise to higher industrial income and production, noting wage gains of 22 percent in Nebraska in 1935 and a national 9 percent rise, with prices likely up but offset by greater output.

F A Cropper of Alliance, district NYA supervisor, met Monday with Mayor Roche, J C Swinbank and G F Liebendorfer to secure cooperation. NYA work is a supplementary part of WPA. workers clock one third of their regular WPA hours.
Brisk ticket sales flood the Sidney auditorium next Monday night for the Hefner versus McQuillan boxing match. Hefner declares he is in top shape and aims for a decisive performance to set up a future Dixon clash, carrying a possible three to eight pound weight edge over McQuillan.
Interest in Sidney city politics surges as caucuses set for March 2 to choose a mayor and city officials. Rumors center on Mayor R B Roche facing a potential second term despite his public stance against another two years. Supporters urge him to reconsider, citing federal aid projects. Possible candidates include former Mayor Herman Schroeder and ex-city official E L Upthegrove, both long-time community leaders.
Cheyenne county young democrats re elected all officers at their annual Sidney gathering Wednesday night. C Edgar Leafdale chairs with Byron Pavlat as treasurer P J Heaton as secretary Jack H Lowe as reporter and publicity director. A motion discussed raising the age limit to 40 years and was sent to the resolutions committee. Members named were Pavlat Heimer and Heaton. A committee was appointed to arrange future meetings and programs.
A Tuesday blaze at the Slayter Auto company damaged the enclosed office and part of the garage with an estimated loss of over 1000 dollars for stock and records. Fuel oil spilled on a red hot stove started the fire. A. D. Slayter entered the garage to retard the flames until firefighters arrived. The front window blew out as flames spread through shelves and a desk. The garage interior was charred but not consumed.
A refinancing plan for the Sidney country club loan was presented at the annual stockholders meeting. If approved, the amortized ten year plan would cut interest from 6 percent to 5 and provide semi annual payments until the debt is paid, helping the club weather a financial storm amid declining memberships. Secretary J W Johnson presented the plan, which directors will consider early.
Sidney high school crushed Kimball 36 to 19 as Hengl led with 17 points and Wendt added 13. The Maroons used two full squads and maintained a comfortable lead throughout, erasing Kimball’s balanced offense led by Swanson Gray and Brown. Coach Rex Reed praised his players' polished recent form.
Weather delays halt three Sidney WPA projects approved for winter start. Financed with about 2855 dollars by the federal government, they include a city park foot bridge a cemetery unknown soldier memorial and two bituminous mat double tennis courts at the city amusement park. The ground remains frozen and the engineer notes a ten percent cost overrun. The work will begin as soon as conditions permit augmenting ongoing water extension and other district jobs in Thomas and Sheridan counties.
The Class C cage tournament set for February 28 29 in Sidney will likely draw teams after G F Liebendorfer invited 11 schools to the drawing. With Dalton Lodge Pole and Potter removed by new classifications the event hinges on strong local attendance to cover costs.
Edward Andrew Collins a pioneer homesteader of the Lorenzo district died Wednesday at his home near Lorenzo after a three month illness. He was 74, born in Canada, moved to the United States in 1876, settled at Nebraska City, then homesteaded south of Lorenzo in 1885 and had lived in Cheyenne county since. He is survived by his wife and three children Earl of Medicine Bow Wyoming George of Gallup New Mexico and Bessie at home. Four brothers and two sisters preceded him in death. News of his death came with deep regret from many old time residents who knew him the past half century.
A broken train whistle blew for over an hour yesterday starting at Pax ton and carried to Sidney and Cheyenne as the engine crew failed to stop it. Fire alarms and phone inquiries flooded the Telegraph as residents wondered why the whistle sounded.
With Washington's Birthday on February 22 the Democratic campaign opens in Nebraska petitions nominating Franklin D Roosevelt for president are being circulated. Sidney Democrats had a chance to sign this week as Nebraska supporters circle toward the June convention. Senator Hugo L Black of Alabama will open the campaign in Lincoln speaking before the Lancaster County Democratic Club.
Idaho Senator Borah told Nebraska progressive Republicans he wants to enter Nebraska's presidential preference primary. He expressed hope to make the grade in the race for the Republican nomination. Barton Green of Lincoln said he would form a committee of prominent Nebraska Republicans to get Borah's name on the ballot.
James Webster 76 of Bayard western Nebraska pioneer died Saturday in Bridgeport after weeks of illness. Funeral services were held Monday at the Federated Church in Bayard. He came to western Nebraska from Minnesota in 1886 and worked as a freighter between Alliance and Sidney before becoming a rancher and later moving to Bayard. He is survived by several nieces and nephews.
Nebraska university alumni and ex-students will hold their annual charter day meeting and dinner at the Commercial hotel dining room next Wednesday February 19. Prof C K Morse extension service will be the principal speaker. Dinner begins at 6:30 with J W Neilsen secretary sending out cards. New officers will be elected.
Nebraska senator George W Norris called Lincoln honest and would likely mirror his own blunt approach if he were president today. Norris said Lincoln would be like him and not know what to do, contrasting others who tailor replies to their party lines.
Nearly 700 visitors attended a special farmers day hosted by L. W. Kahl, dealer for Minneapolis Moline Power Machinery. The event featured the Power on Parade film showing Minneapolis Moline equipment in action and a free lunch. The weather was cold with subzero temps until noon.
Memorial services for Spanish American War veterans will be held at the city auditorium Sunday afternoon February 16 at two o'clock under the Sidney chapter of Veterans of Foreign Wars. A concert by the Sidney band, memorial ceremonies and two speakers complete the program. The public is invited.
