Sidney Housing Survey Captains Briefed In City Meeting

Team captains gathered at City Council Chambers to discuss the Sidney housing survey purpose and recruit five to six volunteers. The project targets the week of February 28 to gauge current housing supply and demand including preferences for newer or larger homes, mobile homes, apartments, or condominiums, and household size. Respondents remain anonymous as surveys are sealed for volunteer collection. A follow up meeting was scheduled for February 23 to distribute surveys.

City Checks Bedient Filing Status For Council Seat

Alan Bedient a Western Nebraska Technical College teacher filed for a city council seat but his application awaits a ruling on eligibility. City Clerk Gordon Tobin said outside public employment may disqualify him and has asked Attorney Tom Dorwart to review if his WNTC job counts. Bedient, of 1640 10th Ave, will not campaign until eligibility is decided. He said he plans no definite campaign stance yet.

County Officials Debate Vo Tech Financing Fight in Panhandle

At the Panhandle County Officials Association meeting in Scottsbluff, officials heard both sides of the dispute over funding Western Nebraska Technical Community College Area. County Clerk Bob Downer urged shifting higher education funding from property owners to students and families, criticizing a one mill levy. Eight counties joined a lawsuit alleging a Duis amendment violation as eight counties withhold funds pending settlement. Dr William Ptacek said treasurers resist funding, while denying program cuts at St Joseph School of Practical Nursing and Sidney’s Western Nebraska Tech.

Chappell and Hayward Low Rent Units Nearing Completion

Construction on HEW funded elderly and low income housing advances in Chappell and Hayward. Six Chappell units include four singles and one duplex, brick veneer by Don Rice. Hayward site north of the school features eight one bed units and three to four bed units with a shared community facility.

Sidney council approves utility rate hike effective March 1

The Sidney City Council on its final reading approved an ordinance raising electric water and sewer charges to boost department income by about 11 percent. The measure follows a two year rate study and aims to address inflation fuel costs and past increases since the last adjustment.

Senate Floor Debate Looms On School Spending Cap

Nebraska lawmakers move LB964 toward floor debate as the Appropriations Committee votes 6-2 to send it to the floor. Gov. Exon supports two percent annual hikes and price index adjustments while a lid provision is dropped from LB772. The plan would keep $55 million in aid for next year and raise to $120 million for 1975 76 with a potential later increase to $165 million being dropped.

GAO report on 1972 wheat exports to Russia shows six exporters may not have had inside information or did not exploit it. Five cooperated. Louis Dreyfus refused. Profits ranged from two cents gain to 1.9 cents loss per bushel across 316 million sold. GAO deemed reports reasonably accurate and fair.
