The Cheyenne County Trade Travel and Farm Exposition is scheduled for May 16 18 with initial plans and a budget approved by the Cheyenne County Chamber of Commerce Trade Fair Committee. The event has been staged twice previously.
Gov. J. James Exon announced John D. Knapp of Kimball will replace retiring judge John Kuns in the 19th District. The Cheyenne area district will host a May 16 to 18 exposition at the Sidney National Guard Armory drawing exhibitors from a wide area. Inside booths cost 50 dollars, outside space 5 dollars per front foot, with a $190 merchandise certificate prize drawn hourly.
The Nebraska Department of Roads accepted low bids for two Cheyenne County guard rail projects. Joseph T. Grof of Tecumseh bid $62,843 for one project, while De Groff's Construction of Atkinson bid $41,340 on the Interstate 80 guard rail work.
The Cornhusker Motor Club reports Nebraska gasoline prices held steady last week with regular at 50.1 cents and premium at 54.3. About equal numbers of stations raised and lowered prices. seven cut up to 1.8 cents and six raised up to 3 cents. Supplies remain good though one station limited purchases and one in six could run dry by month end. Sixty percent close by 7 p.m. only 25 percent open Sundays. Kansas shows a pinch with about a third of its stations limiting purchases.
The Nebraska Legislature gave preliminary approval to 30 noncontroversial bills in a broad housecleaning effort. LB779 drew opposition. it would allow hunting from roads with shotguns, while a rifle variant also exists. The panel approved increases in deer permit management and license fees.
Alan Bedient, Western Nebraska Technical College instructor, filed for Sidney City Council and may stand unless challenged. State law allows written objections within 10 days. the accepting officer will rule and appeals go to the courts. Also, Thomas B. Lenzen filed to be a delegate to the county Democratic convention.
Lincoln man Bowman, 31, died of cancer and was buried at Wynka Cemetery after a private service at Wadlow's Mortuary. He led the TOP program for the mentally challenged, coached Special Olympics, and donated corneas while remembered as a generous, inspiring mentor to many in Lincoln.
Rodger Balfour came home to Sidney after brain surgery in January and will stay with his family until May 1 before reentering Craig Rehabilitation Center in Denver. His mother Mrs. Robert Balfour said he has gained weight and improved since the operation, though doctors warned of possible brain damage with unknown extent of recovery.
Kansas-Nebraska Natural Gas Co will relocate its land group from Hastings to Arvada Colorado on July 1. The unit handles oil and gas leases and will work closer with the exploration group headquartered in Denver. Six employees are offered positions at the Colorado site.
Frances Craig reports a Sidney GED class surprise party for eight years of service by Mrs. Jean Rankin. The event at East Ward Elementary celebrated Rankin and assistants Mrs. Pearlie Copley and Judy Rankin Kuehn, with gifts and a royal tribute.
The Lodgepole Division of the Nebraska Panhandle Resource Conservation Development and Planning Council asked the executive council to lease Depot lands near Sidney to develop oil and gas. Robert's letter cites underdeveloped reserves and drained federal lands as reasons to act. The group also backed a Lodgepole recreation proposal with a $100,000 estimated cost and $25,000 locally raised.
