Political observers forecast the opening of a heated pre election campaign centered on whether Sidney will finance paving this year. The council meeting next Friday will hear opinions on hard surface roads as factions form pro and con platforms while the city faces a spring election and a pivotal paving issue.
E H Biggs, chairman of Cheyenne county Red Cross disaster relief fund, received a letter from Wm M Baxter Jr, manager of St Louis Red Cross, confirming a $275 check toward the county quota and noting receipt from the Washington office. The message praises the committee’s efforts in raising the full chapter quota and shipping several carloads of food.
A barn fire on the Mrs Herman Brauer farm twelve miles south of Sidney last Wednesday night destroyed a large barn and all forty two head of livestock inside. The blaze began at about midnight from an unknown cause and the intense heat prevented any rescue. Spectators watched as the barn burned to ashes. insurance coverage is noted.
The sixth Nebraska school district music contest moves to Scottsbluff for the first time in five years, set for the second week of April. Sidney High School, led by Julius W. Cochran, sends its strongest group ever as the event attracts about 1,000 students and parents. Classes are A for large schools, B for mid, and C for small, with five groups including mixed chorus, boys and girls glee clubs, band, and orchestra.

Observant Sidneyites saw a few flakes of snow in the air Wednesday afternoon. It was the first snow seen here since the blizzard in November. Skies had cleared by Wednesday night, and a threatening wind had subsided.
Corn, a major local crop, will be showcased next week at the Caterpillar school conducted by Thomas O Connell, a local dealer.

Sidney Boy Scouts marked a busy anniversary week with Sunday services at the Methodist church a Monday banquet in the church basement and a Wednesday court of honor in the high school auditorium where scouts received honor awards. Today was designated as home observance in line with the national program.
Alumni of the University of Nebraska in Cheyenne County will attend a Sidney alumni meeting next Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the country club. Dean W. W. Burr will be the principal speaker at the dinner.

Sidney Boy Scouts defeated the Kimball patrols in a basketball game Tuesday night 4 to 2. The match served as a preliminary to the high school game between the two cities. Ladine starred for the Sidney scouts.
Rev. F C Mills of the local Methodist church gave a brief review of Abraham Lincoln for Lions Club members at the Wednesday noon program. Thomas Crisbie organized the event and led the program.
Business in the first six weeks of 1931 has been satisfactory for most Sidney merchants. Wholesalers and retailers exceed 1930 volumes, though price declines mean growth appears smaller. Ready to wear and general merchandise run about the same as last year, with higher turnover offset by lower prices.
The Sidney high school cage quintet, 1930 western champion, has won eight of ten games against Nebraska schools to claim second place in the large western Nebraska conference. They bid for the title this season with a schedule against leading schools of eight counties, having defeated Kimball Chappell Morrill Dalton North Platte and Alliance, with their only in state losses to Lodgepole early this season.
Lodge Pole will host the district basketball tournament next Friday and Saturday. Eight small schools compete with Lodge Pole a slight favorite to win the bunting. Key rivals include Broadwater, Potter, Dalton, and Harrisburg. Opening games pit Potter vs Sundl and Lodge Pole vs Broadwater in the marquee event.
